About the role
As a Marine Charterer, you will be an integral part of our Marine Terminals and Logistics team supporting the Refining & Supply Operations. Your goal is to be responsible for a variety of marine chartering activities including the chartering of barges, crude vessels, including Suezmax, Aframax and VLCCs, as well as clean and black oil vessels as required to support the business needs. Your success will be chartering at current market condition to ensure low transportation costs per barrel (Bbl) to the company. You will also be responsible for selecting the right vessel and negotiating favorable terms to ensure minimal risk exposure in schedule reliability, pollution exposure and meeting customer delivery windows. This role includes collaboration and communication with product traders and the production planning team to ensure all terms and requirements are met. Leveraging strong analytical and supply management skills, you will develop modeling and proof-of-concept proposals to support vessel replacement strategies and other long-term initiatives.

Your Responsibilities
- Manage the chartering function to ensure adequate and appropriate vessels are chartered to meet the company’s operating and safety requirements
- Purchase and manage fuel delivery for charters
- Negotiate chartering terms consistent with internal standards and market conditions. Provide input into strategies on Charter Party terms development, developing and evaluating strategies on contract of affreightment to meet vessel requirements
- Lead moderately complex projects to develop longer term chartering strategies and requirements as they integrate into the supply chain and other areas of the business
- Coordinate with marine operations to ensure the relevant charter party terms and conditions and/or voyage specifics are understood by operations for the accuracy and timing of instructions to both chartered in vessels and company relets
- Cooperate with marine operations to ensure that the assessment and checking of claims from owners/brokers for demurrages, detention, deviation within the terms of the charter party is done in a timely manner in order to negotiate prompt settlement. Support in negotiation and resolution directly with Owners if required
- Provide recommendations for maximizing the fleet revenue and profits on the spot chartered crude vessels to the Senior Manager, Marine. Provide planning and actioning for these recommendations
- Perform day-to-day chartering activities for associated vessels on either time or spot charter. These activities include coordinating delivery and redelivery notices, invoice approvals, reviewing and negotiating any post fixtures requests from Owners, managing Owners to the terms of the charterparty, etc.
- Perform constant review of market conditions, evaluation and recommendation of candidate ships and barges from an operational and financial standpoint and negotiation of the charter conditions with the owners, operators, and brokers
- Coordinate and supervise the chartered ships and barges operations including actual freight versus planned freight cost variance analysis and corrective action, recommendations, invoice approval and payment for follow-up
- Build and foster relationships with both ship owners and brokers, always ensuring a full understanding of the Irving Values
- Communicate regularly with various teams, including product traders, production planning and marine operations ensuring clear alignment on chartering requirements and strategies
- Communicate updates to the market as required. This may include views on rates, availability and changes in market dynamics
- Identify, analyze, and present strategies to management, including opportunities with a focus on lowering the cost per barrel (Bbl) of either crude or product transportation
- Compile monthly, quarterly, and yearly KPIs, and performance data for both accounting and management as required
- Produce weekly newsletter reporting on the market conditions over the previous week as required
Your Skills
- Strong analytical and negotiation skills
- Strong financial analysis abilities
- Strong communication skills, both written and spoken
- Good listening skills, ability and willingness to invest time in understanding the direction of the various shipping markets you will be expected to follow
- Be flexible and adaptable to constant changing and fast-moving environment/situation
- Ability to handle many multi-tasks on very diverse range of subject
- Build customer relationships with both ship owners and brokers, always ensuring a full understanding of the Irving Values
Travel
- Minimal travel may be required
Your Experience
- Knowledge and experience working with Maritime Law, chartering terms and conditions, and their implications
- Experience and knowledge of claim procedures/settlements
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in tanker ship chartering
- Experience in tanker vessel operations. Experience to include, but not limited to, understanding tank segregations and pipeline layouts
- Experience in the purchasing of Marine bunkers
