The Molecular Science department at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is a leader in Canadian basic, translational, and personalized mental health and addiction research. The department is seeking an energetic and motivated Research Manager. The Research Manager will support all scientists and core services aligned with the department. This includes, but is not limited to, research trainee registrations, budget forecasting and tracking, ethics applications and renewals, management of biosafety permits, equipment acquisition and preventive maintenance, compliance with training policies and regulatory requirements, implementation and review of quality control and assurance practices, negotiation of legal contracts, engaging with equipment and supply vendors, data management, hiring and performance evaluation of staff, optimization and validation of experimental protocols, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders. This position is currently located at 250 College Street.

Job Requirements Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in an applicable science or health science academic discipline is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a health research position with demonstrated leadership capabilities is required.
  • 5+ years of experience in an addictions and mental health research position, including increasing management experience in a unionized employment environment, is preferred.

Knowledge And Skills

  • Research project management.
  • Good understanding of the Canadian and U.S. grant funding landscape.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and processes.
  • Experience with grant accounting, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Experience with day-to-day operations of scientific labs.
  • Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of, and ability to troubleshoot, molecular biology techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, genotyping, Sanger sequencing, real-time PCR, epigenetic applications, ELISAs, microarray analysis and next-generation sequencing.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, conceptual, and decision-making skills.
  • Leadership and mentorship skills, and must work well in a team environment.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate biological concepts effectively to lay people.
  • Ability to take control of complex situations, with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving.
  • Ability to manage a multiplicity of tasks with a high degree of focus, including the ability to rapidly shift between a number of relevant priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Bilingualism (French / English) and/or proficiency in a second language is an asset.
