EPR Principal Trainer
Unity Health Toronto’s Digital team is driving ongoing innovation following the successful launch of our new electronic patient record (EPR) system. Designed to enhance clinical workflows and improve the patient experience, this transformative system is now live across our network. We are seeking a Principal Trainer to support end users through effective, engaging training and help ensure long-term adoption and success.
Job Profile:
The Principal Trainer plays a key role in the development and delivery of training content for specific modules within Unity Health Toronto’s electronic patient record (EPR) system and other hospital systems. This role bridges technology, clinical workflows, and professional practice to deliver high-quality education to end users across the organization.
The ideal candidate brings expertise in curriculum design, adult education, and the use of varied delivery methods and evaluation tools. Working within the EPR governance structure, the Principal Trainer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive education program that supports both clinical and non-clinical staff in effectively and efficiently using the EPR to manage all aspects of patient care.
Main Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development and End User Training

Develops the training requirements for end users of the EPR and other hospital systems, including clinical, non-clinical staff and learners using creative and forward thinking approaches to meeting the educational needs of the various stakeholders;

Leads the development of a modular curriculum that supports safe and effective clinical workflows

Collaborates with leaders, clinicians, end users IT, and vendors to incorporate safe and best practices, as well as professional and practice standards in the curriculum;

Supports development and maintenance of training environment specific to assigned modules.

Identifies appropriate educational methodology for optimal learning for end users

Uses knowledge of system setup, clinical record building, and real-world workflows to make training relevant and practical

Develops eLearning modules that align with curriculum objectives, using interactive and accessible formats to support self-directed learning

Delivers training to help users navigate and use the EPR in their day-to-day work

Plans and updates curriculum based on system changes and user feedback
Provides Ongoing Evaluation, Testing and Revision of Work Flows
- Monitors the use of the system by users to ensure users are using the system, in an efficient, effective and appropriate manner;
- Identifies users’ knowledge gaps and offers targeted support and training
- Assesses workflows, practice changes, and learning needs to inform improvements
Reviews training sessions or e-learning modules and adjusts content or approach to improve learning outcomes
Implements timely solutions to address issues and improve workflows or training
Participation in Meetings
- Regularly attends workgroups and other system-related meetings to stay updated on workflows, changes, and requirements
- Develops, maintains and updates policies and procedures related to training.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a recognized Bachelors degree in a related health care field. Masters degree program e.g., Health Informatics, Nursing, Health Administration, Education preferred.
- Three (3) years experience in developing curriculum and training programs for clinical end users.
- Three (3) years recent clinical experience preferred.
- Related experience with providing adult education in a health care setting with a demonstrated personal commitment to continuing education and learning required;
- Valid passport and ability to travel to the United States of America to complete mandatory vendor training certification program required;
- Successful completion of the vendor training certification program is a requirement for continued employment in this role.
- Experience in providing consultative services for application systems, as well as managing a positive customer relationship with Clinicians and project teams required; must be well informed on the use of EPR;
- Proven leadership capabilities in a team environment required;
- Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to provide positive/constructive feedback in situational learning required;
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a self-directed/organized manner, with a willingness to take on additional responsibilities in a multitasking environment required;
- Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and facilitation/presentation skills required, with knowledge of Standards of Care an asset;
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills, strong organizational skills coupled with well-developed written and verbal communication skills required;
- Demonstrated time management and priority setting skills to facilitate accomplishing assigned work deliverables in a dynamic climate of competing demands required;
- Demonstrated proficiency working with computer applications in a Windows environment, i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, computerized calendar and the internet required;
- Demonstrated ability develop e-learning and knowledge of eLearning content development software (e.g., Articulate) is preferred
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach and facilitate change and innovation required;
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage relationship across diverse stakeholder groups is essential;
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast paced/multi-disciplinary environment and prioritize through utilization of strong organizational and time management skills required;
- Ability to work flexible hours in response to requirements.
