Assignment Producer, Bureaus CBC Manitoba

CBC Manitoba is looking for an experienced journalist to fill the key role of Assignment Producer for bureaus in our newsroom. This is a full time, permanent position.

The ideal candidate will be a positive and influential leader who inspires the news team to think creatively and deliver multi-platform stories that are relevant and impactful for our audience.

As Assignment Producer for Bureaus, you coordinate the production of stories and segments for all platforms. There may be wide latitude for initiative, independent judgement and creativity. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to supervise the work of others.

You will regularly connect with people in the communities we serve.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding and awareness of issues and events particular to our bureaus in Steinbach, Brandon and Northern Manitoba and will have strong ties to, and a deep understanding of, underrepresented communities and equity-deserving groups.

You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences.

Your responsibilities:

  • On a daily basis the Producer will work with reporters in the bureaus, developing ideas, overseeing their journalism, and helping them create stories for our online, radio and video platforms
  • Plan, organize and coordinate content for digital and broadcast newscasts.
  • Develop the program content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
  • Direct on-air talent and technical resources across all platforms.
  • Select, re-write and/or edit copy or text written by others.

Your profile:

  • Proven understanding of the stories of underrepresented communities and how to tell them.
  • Demonstrated editorial judgement in breaking news and enterprise journalism.
  • Ability to generate original story ideas and treatments.
  • Ability to multitask and juggle the demands of a newsroom.
  • High energy and enthusiastic journalist who can motivate a team towards journalistic excellence.
  • Self-motivated critical thinker with the ability to innovate.
  • Strong leadership skills with demonstrated coaching ability.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to maintain close cooperation with your program unit.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, highly creative and resourceful.
  • Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools and industry trends.
