We are seeking a permanent Protection Maintenance Engineering Section Head to join our System Protection and Controls
Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise and specialized technical leadership to Professional Engineers and Technologists within Protection &

Controls Maintenance Engineering section on equipment problems, maintenance and commissioning procedures, using the
latest technology and tools.

  • Liaise with senior staff in other departments, utilities and equipment suppliers on non-routine and complex issues associated

with Manitoba Hydro's protection, controls, and grid modernization assets.

  • Perform complex investigative studies and prepare complex engineering reports on protection, metering and control systems

dealing with the operational performance, modification, repair or replacement of these systems.

  • Use advanced Asset Management methodologies and tools to model and perform optimization studies and generate

investment justifications for protection relays, controls assets, and grid modernization assets. This includes developing new
processes, leading, and developing the necessary infrastructure to obtain the data required for the studies.

  • Identify the assets need replacing in the long-term basis using the Predictive Analytics and create and justify CIJs for funding

approvals and coordinate the capital projects with relevant project managers.

  • Identify and justify the Operation & Maintenance based capital projects to replace protection and controls systems in the

short-term (emergency) and medium-term basis and coordinate the capital projects.

  • Lead the PRC Working Group and generate / update the necessary compliance documentation such as Protection System

Maintenance Program (PSMP) and task templates to meet the current NERC PRC standards and take necessary planning
actions through the PRC Working Group to be compliant with evolving NERC PRC standards.

  • In a consultant capacity, lead teams and participate in the execution of department initiatives. Identify issues with longer time

horizons which may impact the corporation and lead the development of solutions.

  • Supervise a team of technical support staff and/or consultants and perform administrative duties concerning selection, training

and developmental planning and performance management.

  • Use advanced analytical tools and techniques to identify root cause issues and develop solutions for protection, metering,

recording and control systems.

  • Ensure that system faults are thoroughly resolved and that changes on installed equipment are satisfactorily completed.
  • Utilize a project management approach to assume overall responsibility for assigned projects, including but not limited to

control of scope, scheduling, and budgeting, monitoring of expenditures, and for successful completion and in-service of all
assigned projects, which may require the direct coordination of field and office project activities.

  • In consultation with maintenance staff, establish performance criteria and monitoring, test and maintenance standards

procedures for new and existing equipment and systems.

  • Prepare and give lectures on relevant subjects at corporate training schools and seminars for protection or controls

professionals and field staff. Provide technical guidance for Engineers, technicians and technical staff training and

development.

  • Make recommendations on, assist in, the development and implementation of departmental strategic initiatives as they apply

to Protection maintenance.

  • Create and implement staff development and succession plans for members of the Protection Maintenance Engineering

Section to ensure long term sustainability.

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with NERC – PRC, NERC – CIP standards and MH's ICS program as they relate to protection,

controls and grid modernization systems.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing plus one year of additional training with seven

years of engineering experience including four years of directly related protection & controls system experience and of which
two years' experience are in a supervisory and administration capacity.

  • Must have completed Standards of Conduct training or be willing to complete within two weeks of start date.
  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a

specified amount of time).

  • Broad and comprehensive knowledge of protection and control apparatus, grid modernization and distribution automation

systems, system operating procedure and a good understanding of power system operations and commissioning practices.

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to plan, organize, schedule and complete a high volume of work with a minimum of

supervision.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and administer a specialized work group.
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with internal and external customers, dealing with staff at

various levels.

  • Tactful and diplomatic with the ability to gain the confidence and respect of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Occasional travel to field or office work sites outside of the headquarters zone will be required.
  • Familiar with and adherent to all safety rules.
  • Familiar with and adherent to all applicable NERC-PRC and NERC-CIP standards, and Manitoba Hydro's ICS program.
  • Possess a valid Manitoba Driver's Licence.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Personal Risk Assessment and a "Clear" security rating in accordance with Manitoba

Hydro policy P513.

Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $55.94- $76.64 Hourly,
$107,201.12-$146,866.46 Annually.
