About the role
Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.
The Intern, Finance (FP&A) will support in delivering financial planning & analysis across the three shipyards at Seaspan Shipyards. This position collaborates with teams across operating divisions to consolidate financial data for the reports and analyze results. The ability to clearly communicate the results, very strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities are essential for this role. The position reports to the Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis (Seaspan Shipyards).
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you’ll do
- Assist in the preparation of internal executive reporting and board materials.
- Assist in the quarterly forecasting and annual budgeting processes.
- Support senior analysts to prepare variance reports against budget and forecast.
- Support the preparation of the weekly Shipyards KPI report.
- Support the preparation of the weekly cash flow forecast.
- Under the guidance of the Manager, FP&A and senior analysts, help to develop and/or maintain detailed process and procedure documentation where necessary.
- Perform additional ad-hoc analysis and other duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring
- Enrollment in a 3 rd or 4 th -year Finance or Accounting degree program is required.
- Strong understanding of all three financial statements: Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow.
- 1-2 years of experience in a business/financial analysis role, with preference for candidates with experience working in a complex multi-business environment.
- Work well under pressure and can prioritize multiple tasks to meet timely deadlines.
- Very strong attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication with ability to communicate with others with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to capture and synthesize data into relevant metrics and measures for analysis.
- High level of proficiency in Excel (lookups, pivot tables, index match) and PowerPoint.
- Experience using BI tools (SAP BI, Power BI or equivalent). Experience working with query and data connectivity is considered an asset.
- Enjoy a hands-on role and the chance to dig into the details.
- Being proactive and self-motivated to learn new concepts and participate in new projects.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
