About the role

Mandate

The Director, Infrastructure Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the university’s core technology infrastructure that enables the university’s digital services. The role ensures that UVic’s infrastructure is modern, secure, sustainable, and reliable and capable of supporting data-intensive teaching, learning, research, and administrative services. This includes responsibility for enterprise and hybrid cloud infrastructure, data centres, networks, cybersecurity infrastructure, and disaster recovery capabilities.

Objectives

Provide strategic direction for enterprise infrastructure services aligned with university priorities, including artificial intelligence, financial sustainability, and cybersecurity. Ensure the availability, integrity, security, and performance of critical technology infrastructure. Lead the planning and evolution of networks, servers, storage, data centre services, and cybersecurity infrastructure. Support research, teaching, and administrative functions through reliable technology services. Develop long-term infrastructure roadmaps, investment plans, and sustainability strategies. Foster a high-performing and collaborative infrastructure services team. Advance business continuity, disaster recovery, and cybersecurity capabilities. Represent the university in sector and external partnerships related to infrastructure.

Unusual Working Conditions

Occasional response to critical infrastructure incidents, cybersecurity events, and major service disruptions. Participation in after-hours maintenance activities and emergency response when required. Responsibility for highly critical services where outages may have institution-wide impact. High level of strategic, operational, and financial decision-making affecting university-wide technology services. Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline. Significant experience leading enterprise infrastructure, network, data centre, or platform services in a large and complex organization. Experience managing large-scale technology projects, procurement, budgets, and operational teams. Experience developing and administering budgets, IT financial models, and long-term investment plans. Demonstrated success leading organizational change and technology transformation initiatives. Experience supervising managers and professional technical staff in a unionized environment. Experience working collaboratively with diverse stakeholder groups. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Extensive knowledge of enterprise infrastructure, networking, cloud services, cybersecurity, data centres, and disaster recovery. Strategic thinking and the ability to balance long-term vision with operational execution. Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making capabilities. Strong financial, business planning, and resource management skills. Ability to lead complex initiatives and manage multiple priorities. Demonstrated ability to build, motivate, and develop high-performing teams. Strong relationship-building, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Sound judgment, diplomacy, and discretion in managing sensitive issues. Ability to influence organizational change and achieve results through collaboration and consensus building. Commitment to service excellence, continuous improvement, and innovation.
