Registered Practical Nurse - Clinical Scholar

DEPARTMENT:

Nursing Professional Practice (NPP)

CONDITIONS:

Temporary Part-Time (0.60 FTE) for approximately one (1) month

HOURS:

Approximately 45.0 Bi-weekly Hours

SHIFTS:

Days / Evenings / Nights / Weekends

7.5 hours per shift (subject to change)

CUPE26 $34.59/hr $39.02/hr

Reporting directly to the manager of Nursing Professional Practice, the primary purpose of the RPN Clinical Scholar is to mentor nurses, help build/assess their clinical expertise and support successful transition, integration, and retention within the nursing workforce. Clinical Scholar support will focus on mentoring nurses who are seeking to increase proficiency in their skills as well as assist in transition into selected specialty areas. The Clinical Scholar will work in a supernumerary role and must be an experienced nurse with frontline practice. The RPN Clinical Scholar will work closely with the Nurse Educators in Medicine and Rehabilitation areas to identify needs and build a positive, healthy, and safe learning mentorship-professional practice environment. The role serves as an added layer of support allowing the Clinical Scholar to provide on-unit support and mentorship guidance by facilitating in-the-moment best practice education with respect to both clinical and non-clinical skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively connecting with front line nursing to ensure the delivery of professional nursing care at the bedside by utilizing evidence-based practice.
  • Providing guidance, constructive feedback, and mentorship in a meaningful way to nurses performing clinical skills
  • Through coaching and mentorship, assist the nurse in establishing, providing, and evaluating care to patients and families
  • Providing appropriate learning experiences for new nurses congruent with their level of experience and learning needs
  • Demonstrating critical thinking in the nursing process while collecting and interpreting data, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of nursing care
  • Ensure high level of collaboration with other team members including Nurse Educators, Care Facilitators, and leadership
  • Practicing to the full scope of practice of the Registered Practical Nurse on Medicine and Rehabilitation units to coach or support new nurses towards evolving their own safe, independent nursing practice
  • Has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to guide competent, evidence-based nursing practice that complies with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Standards of Practice, QCH Policies and Procedures as well as the standards of care appropriate to the applicants are of clinical practice
  • Guiding new nurses in developing their ability to critically think and be self-reliant
  • Other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the General Class with a minimum of 5 years of recent clinical experience in two (2) or more specialties listed below (one of which must be medicine or surgery):

          • Medicine
          • Surgery
          • Alternate Level of Care
          • Rehabilitation
          • Geriatrics
  • Current BCLS certification

  • Experience in frontline care in a hospital clinical setting

  • Competencies to provide training and mentorship confirmed by Nursing Professional Practice team.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively within the nursing and inter-professional teams

  • Demonstrated computer competency (MS Office Suite, Meditech) Previous experience teaching, working with clinical learners and/or precepting

  • Demonstrated leadership, change management and problem-solving skills

  • Experience with Elsevier

PREFERRED:

  • Experience as a preceptor/mentor
  • Experience with clinical documentation in an Electronic Health Record
  • Membership in WeRPN, certifications and associations related to nursing specialty (CNA Medical-Surgical Practical Nurse Certified (MSPNC(C))
