About the role
SMS Equipment is seeking a safety‑focused and detail‑oriented Quality Assurance/Quality Control Inspectorto support our welding and remanufacturing operations. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the integrity, quality, and compliance of heavy mining equipment components through Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT), welding inspections, and adherence to established standards and procedures. This position plays a critical role in supporting safe operations, reliable repairs, and continuous improvement by delivering accurate inspections and collaborating closely with operational teams.
Work Location: Fort McMurray, AB
Salary: $100,000****to $110,000per annum
Work Arrangement: Fixed on site – working from the shop each day
Schedule: 14&14, Wednesday to Tuesday shift
We’re hiring for both a full-time permanent role and a full-time contract position through December 2026, with the possibility of extension.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) inspections on heavy mining equipment components.
- Set up, calibrate, and maintain inspection and testing equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Execute inspection assignments in compliance with company procedures, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality.
- Monitor and inspect components throughout rebuilding and repair processes to verify compliance with quality standards and specifications.
- Review Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and inspection requirements prior to the start of welding activities.
- Verify base metals and welding filler materials prior to and during welding activities.
- Inspect and evaluate welds in accordance with applicable procedures, industry standards, codes, and engineering drawings.
- Identify, document, and report defects, non‑conformances, and deviations from quality requirements.
- Prepare accurate and detailed inspection reports using company‑approved software and systems.
- Proactively report unsafe conditions, hazards, or incidents and adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Build positive working relationships with clients, tradespeople, and team members to support collaboration and communication.
What You Bring
You are a certified Quality Control professional with hands‑on experience performing NDT and welding inspections in industrial or heavy equipment environments. You bring a strong working knowledge of welding standards, inspection techniques, and quality assurance practices, along with the ability to interpret engineering drawings and procedures. Safety, accuracy, and documentation are central to how you work, and you are comfortable collaborating with trades, supervisors, and clients in a fast‑paced shop environment. Additional requirements include:
- Valid CGSB Level 2 certification (Magnetic Testing – MT)
- Valid CWB Level 1 certification (CSA W47.1 and W59)
- Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings, welding procedures, codes, and standards
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify, document, and report non‑conformances
- Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel for inspection reporting and documentation
- Ability to work independently while maintaining strong working relationships with internal teams and stakeholders
- Physically capable of performing work in industrial environments, including confined spaces, working at heights, and variable conditions
Assets
- Welding Engineering Technology (WET) diploma or equivalent technical training
- Experience inspecting heavy mining equipment components or remanufactured assemblies
- Familiarity with weld mapping, filler material verification, and base metal identification
- Experience working in a remanufacturing or repair shop environment
This position is classified as an Individual Contributor role in SMS Equipment’s competency framework, requiring demonstration of core competencies (customer focus, collaboration, and technical/functional expertise).
