About this opportunity: Cenovus is currently seeking a Senior Site Process Control Technologist for our Foster Creek facility. In this role, you will provide advanced technical support in logic programming, controls troubleshooting, and system analysis. You will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to address daily operational needs while also supporting longer-term improvement initiatives through the Management of Change (MOC) process.
While this vacancy is currently at Foster Creek this posting could be used to fill vacancies at any of the three Oil Sands Operations sites (Christina Lake, Foster Creek, or Sunrise, based on business need). Work Environment: Foster Creek & Christina Lake
- This is a full-time employee position working a shift rotation
- Foster Creek and Christina Lake has full-service camp facilities
- Depending on your place of residence and your shift rotation, bus and/or air transportation to/from site is offered from designated departure points in select locations
- Foster Creek is serviced by flight Hubs in Calgary and Edmonton
- Christina Lake is serviced by flight Hubs in Calgary and Edmonton as well as bus transportation to site from La Corey, AB. and Lac La Biche, AB
Sunrise
- This is a full-time employee position working a shift rotation
- Sunrise is located approximately 100 km northeast of the City of Fort McMurray and is a fly in/ fly out remote camp-based position.
- Cenovus will provide transportation to Sunrise from designated hubs out of Calgary and Edmonton
- At the Sunrise site, employees will be provided comfortable camp accommodations and recreational amenities
What you’ll do:
- Provide daily process control support for Operations, delivering frontline troubleshooting and coordinating with Field/Well Pads, PDO, Water Re-use, Steam, and Utilities teams to ensure safe and reliable plant performance.
- Maintain and enhance control system standards, configuration guidelines, troubleshooting procedures, training materials, workflow dashboards, and the Operations Technology Knowledge Base.
- Support safety programs by reporting Process Control–related incidents, participating in site safety initiatives, and identifying improvement opportunities within DCS/PLC/SCADA and automation systems.
- Investigate production losses related to control system events, providing technical analysis and contributing to corrective and preventive actions.
- Plan and execute control system work for outages, turnarounds, shutdowns, and startups, including pre-commissioning, commissioning, and PCS task coordination.
- Implement Operations Bypass requests, apply and remove force logic, and support daily bump tests in accordance with established procedures.
- Execute automation Management of Change (MOC) packages, participate in HAZOPs, FATs, peer reviews, and ensure programming complies with engineering documentation, standards, and best practices.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, redlines, as-builts, eSDK updates, and time tracking, ensuring proper turnover to Document Management and alignment with controlled engineering records.
Who you are: Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:
- Legally authorized to work in Canada
- Engineering degree, ASET certification, or relevant Journeyman/alternative education.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in electrical/instrumentation roles involving control, safety, or automation systems.
- Hands-on expertise with major systems: Honeywell Experion & Safety Manager, Triconex, Emerson DeltaV & DeltaV SIS; plus working knowledge of ABB systems, ControlLogix PLCs, HIMA, GE Woodward GAP, and SCADA platforms.
- Strong understanding of industrial communication networks and protocols (Profibus, Modbus, ControlNet, radio networks).
- Experience with operations and engineering tools such as Historians, OPC interfaces, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Bluebeam.
- Background in plant construction, SAT testing, commissioning/start-up, or facility operations (SAGD experience considered an asset).
