The firm delivers multidisciplinary engineering solutions for projects ranging from approximately $500,000 to $50 million. About the Role Our client is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer / Technologist to lead the design, programming, configuration, integration, testing, and commissioning of industrial control systems. This role will work closely with project managers, multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, vendors, contractors, and field personnel to deliver automation projects from initial design through procurement, implementation, commissioning, and start-up.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, oversee automation deliverables, support project planning and execution, mentor junior team members, and act as a key technical contact throughout the project lifecycle. Key Responsibilities Lead the development of functional design requirements, design specifications, control narratives, shutdown keys, I/O lists, system architecture drawings, network diagrams, and related automation engineering documentation. Establish control-system design philosophies, technical standards, and execution strategies for assigned projects. Lead or participate in P&ID reviews, HAZOP/PHA sessions, constructability reviews, and multidisciplinary design reviews. Work with project managers to define project scope, schedules, budgets, staffing requirements, deliverables, and execution plans. Develop and review engineering estimates, material take-offs, bills of materials, equipment specifications, and procurement packages. Lead technical bid evaluations and support vendor, supplier, and equipment selection. Review and approve vendor drawings, technical submissions, equipment configurations, and control-system documentation. Coordinate automation requirements with process, instrumentation, electrical, mechanical, civil, and other engineering disciplines. Lead the programming, configuration, integration, and testing of PLC, SCADA, DCS, and HMI systems. Configure and troubleshoot industrial networks, communication protocols, and associated equipment. Develop testing and commissioning strategies and lead internal testing, FAT, SWAT, SAT, commissioning, start-up, and performance-verification activities. Provide senior-level field troubleshooting, system integration, control-loop tuning, and start-up support. Act as a primary technical contact for clients, vendors, contractors, and internal project stakeholders. Identify project risks, technical issues, scope changes, cost impacts, and schedule concerns and develop practical solutions. Lead QA/QC reviews of automation engineering documentation, programming, configuration, and test records. Support manpower planning, workload distribution, project forecasting, and project review meetings. Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and technologists and provide technical oversight of their work. Contribute to the development of internal engineering standards, templates, tools, and best practices. Ensure automation deliverables comply with project requirements, applicable codes, safety standards, regulatory requirements, and company quality practices. Core Competencies 8 or more years of progressive experience in industrial automation, controls, instrumentation, or control-systems engineering. Experience in oil and gas, industrial, utility, engineering consulting, or EPCM project environments. Advanced experience with control-system design, programming, configuration, integration, testing, commissioning, and start-up. Advanced experience with at least one major automation platform, including Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Emerson, Honeywell, ABB, or Yokogawa. Experience across multiple automation platforms is considered an asset. Experience leading automation scopes through engineering, procurement, fabrication, testing, field implementation, commissioning, and project closeout. Experience developing and reviewing control narratives, shutdown keys, I/O lists, system architectures, network diagrams, and related technical documentation. Experience leading FAT, SWAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and start-up activities. Strong knowledge of industrial communication networks, protocols, control-system architecture, and system integration. Experience preparing and reviewing project estimates, schedules, execution plans, equipment specifications, procurement packages, and technical bid evaluations. Experience reviewing and approving the work of engineers, technologists, programmers, vendors, and contractors. Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, industry practices, and quality-control requirements. Strong client-facing communication, technical writing, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage competing technical, schedule, budget, and resource priorities. Ability to lead multidisciplinary coordination and mentor junior technical personnel. Education and Experience Engineering degree or Technology diploma in automation, electrical, instrumentation, controls, or a closely related field from a recognized institution. Professional registration with APEGA, certification as a Certified Engineering Technologist with ASET, or an equivalent professional designation is preferred. Experience in EPCM, engineering consulting, oil and gas, industrial, utility, or similar project environments is preferred.
