Job Summary

As stewards of the campus, Facilities Management fosters and enriches an inviting and functional environment that welcomes and supports all who come here. The team works together to ensure effective, efficient and safe performance for the operation, maintenance and repair of campus buildings.

Reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor/Chief Power Engineer, the Lead Hand Mechanical Trades Worker performs trades duties at the journeyperson level in a variety of mechanical and piping trades; and journeyperson level work specifically to the trades qualifications of the incumbent. Under the direction of the Supervisor the Lead Hand coordinates and distributes the work of mechanical shop staff as assigned to general maintenance or new installation work. Provides coaching and advice to assigned maintenance trades workers. Completes time keeping and recording keeping work associated with the crew assignment. Maintains safe working conditions. Troubleshoots operating problems and mechanical failures related to building mechanical systems. Prepares for project work in the assigned areas of responsibility. Assists the supervisor with estimating. Relieves for supervisor (shop-head) in their absence.

Job Requirements

Skills:

  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Proficient in using computers.
  • Able to plan and organize work.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff and outside agencies and business partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and coach others

Specialized Knowledge/Education:

  • Grade 12 (or equivalency)
  • BC or interprovincial trades qualification in one of the mechanical, piping and/or HVAC trades and/or power engineer 3rd class.
  • To relive as acting chief power engineer, the incumbent must have a minimum of a 4th class certificate of competency, in addition to journeyperson level qualifications in a mechanical trade.
  • Training or education in the areas of leadership, management and supervision.
  • Safety training and knowledge of applicable codes and standards, and Work Safe BC regulations.
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver's license.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years' experience in the trade as a journeyperson in the specified trades-area.
  • 1 year shop/plant lead-hand type experience in an institutional or industrial setting.
  • User level competence with building automation systems.
  • Planning, organizing and monitoring day-to-day work activities and standards in a shop and/or plant environment.
  • Familiarity with use of a computerized maintenance management system.

  • Willingness to work any recognized shift including weekends.
