About the role

This position has a term length of one year plus one day, with the possibility of extension.

Location - This position offers a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of remote and in-office work (in Edmonton) based on work preferences. Preference for schedule will be discussed during the recruitment process.

Position Summary

Working in the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI)’s Operations Centre, the Digital Content & Engagement Coordinator plays a central role in managing ABMI’s web presence and developing clear, engaging digital content that supports program and project objectives. This position coordinates maintenance, content, and tracking for ABMI’s main website and key satellite platforms, ensuring they are accessible, accurate, and user-friendly.

The Faculty of Science is internationally recognized for excellence in research and education. Through pioneering discovery and innovation, the faculty addresses global challenges across disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computing science, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. Its work positions the university at the forefront of technological, environmental, and scientific advancement.

The role is responsible for creating and editing content for public audiences (e.g., newsletters, blogs, web pages, digital reports), translating technical information into plain-language summaries and stories that resonate with diverse users. The position also supports the planning and delivery of program- and project-specific communications and outreach plans and assists with engagement activities in collaboration with partners, stakeholders, and end-users.

1. Web & Digital Platform Management

  • Site Maintenance: Coordinate maintenance, updates, and content changes for the main ABMI website (abmi.ca), ensuring information is current, accurate, and aligned with branding and communication priorities.
  • Satellite Support: Support and coordinate content and user-interface needs for satellite websites and digital platforms, collaborating with internal teams and external partners.
  • Feature Implementation: Collaborate with web developers, IT staff, and subject matter experts to plan and implement new web pages, features, and functionality that support program needs.
  • UX/UI Optimization: Monitor websites for usability, navigation, and user interface/experience (UI/UX) issues, identifying and communicating improvements to the developer team.
  • Accessibility Compliance: Monitor and support the implementation of web accessibility best practices (e.g., structure, headings, alt text) to align with institutional and legal requirements.
  • Analytics & Reporting: Monitor and report on website usage (via Google Analytics or similar tools) to understand audience behaviour; prepare concise dashboards to support leadership decision-making.

2. Digital Content Development & Storytelling

  • Content Creation: Create, edit, and format content for public audiences across multiple digital channels, including web pages, blogs, newsletters, and email campaigns.
  • Knowledge Translation: Translate technical and scientific information from program teams into plain-language summaries, key messages, FAQs, and narratives suitable for non-specialist audiences.
  • Editorial Management: Coordinate and synthesize content for annual reports, online reports, and major digital publications, ensuring accuracy and clarity.
  • Quality Control: Provide copy-editing and proofreading support for communications materials, ensuring consistency of style, tone, grammar, and branding.
  • Visual Integration: Work with designers and developers to integrate visuals (figures, infographics, images) into digital content.
  • Planning: Maintain a content calendar to ensure timely delivery and updates of digital materials.

3. Communications Planning, Outreach, and Engagement

  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with project teams to develop and implement tailored engagement and outreach plans.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Support the development of engagement activities with partners, stakeholders, and end-users.

  • Launch Support: Coordinate the engagement, release, and promotion of new reports, tools, data products, and web features.

  • User Feedback: Gather and document feedback from users on ABMI products and share insights with internal teams to inform improvements.

  • Team Support: Contribute to cross-team communications and engagement initiatives led by the Communications and Engagement Team.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.

  • Three years of experience in digital communications, web content management, or a similar role.

  • Experience creating accessible, engaging content for public audiences (e.g., websites, newsletters, blogs, reports, social media).

  • Ability to translate technical or scientific information into clear, plain-language content.

  • Experience managing website content using a CMS and applying web usability and accessibility best practices.

  • Familiarity with web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics) to inform content decisions.

  • Experience supporting communications or outreach initiatives for programs or projects.

  • Working knowledge of email marketing, project management, and basic design tools (e.g., Mailchimp, Trello/Asana, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is an asset.

  • Excellent writing, editing, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to high-quality communications.

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to manage competing priorities.

  • Experience in environmental, biodiversity, or research-focused organizations is an asset.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally, if required; a valid Class 5 driver’s licence may be needed for travel.

  • Ability to follow safety protocols when working or traveling in outdoor environments.
