Job Description
Junior Mechanical Designer is an entry-level engineering role based in Markham, Ontario, Canada, focused on the design and assessment of building mechanical systems within a multidisciplinary project environment.
The position supports the delivery of HVAC and building services design through the preparation of engineering calculations, technical documentation, 2D drawings, and 3D building models. Responsibilities span mechanical design development, equipment research, supplier coordination, technical reporting, and design documentation. The role provides exposure to multiple project phases, including design development, engineering analysis, interdisciplinary coordination, and project delivery.
The ideal candidate holds a Mechanical Engineering degree and demonstrates a strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer. Exposure to building systems design, drafting technologies, engineering calculations, and collaborative project environments will support success in this role while contributing to ongoing professional development.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform heating and cooling load calculations and support HVAC system design analysis for building projects. Assist with ductwork sizing and piping system design in accordance with project requirements and engineering standards. Prepare detailed mechanical design drawings using AutoCAD and develop Building Information Modeling (BIM) content using Autodesk Revit. Develop and maintain engineering calculators and design spreadsheets to improve design efficiency and technical accuracy. Coordinate with equipment suppliers to obtain technical specifications, product data, and equipment selection information. Prepare technical reports, engineering sketches, drawing mark-ups, and project documentation under the direction of senior engineers. Support multidisciplinary design coordination and contribute to project delivery schedules across multiple assignments. Conduct technical research and engineering analysis to support mechanical system design decisions. Participate in site visits and field investigations as required to support project execution and design verification. Maintain knowledge of applicable codes, standards, software platforms, and industry best practices relevant to building mechanical systems. Perform additional project-related engineering and design support activities as required.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. Foundational knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles. Understanding of HVAC system fundamentals and building mechanical services design. Experience through academic projects, co-op placements, internships, or related exposure to AutoCAD. Experience through academic projects, co-op placements, internships, or related exposure to Autodesk Revit. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including engineering calculations and spreadsheet development. Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and stakeholder coordination. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines. Ability to work in-office a minimum of three days per week. Ability to visit project sites as required. Years of Experience: 0–2 years of relevant academic, internship, co-op, or professional experience.
Assets
Academic or internship experience within the buildings engineering or MEP consulting sector. Exposure to Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows and model coordination processes. Experience developing automated engineering spreadsheets, formulas, or calculation tools. Familiarity with mechanical equipment selection and manufacturer technical documentation. Exposure to multidisciplinary building design projects involving architectural and electrical disciplines. Knowledge of Canadian building design practices and construction methodologies.
