  Description:ISP100H5: Writing for University and Beyond This course teaches writing and reading-related skills that are necessary for success in the transition to university work. The course uses a "Writing About Writing" approach to help students understand the writing process, with an emphasis on the concepts of discourse communities, genre, rhetoric, argument, and audience. Rather than focusing on discipline-specific writing skills, the course helps students develop transferable writing skills. ISP100H5 is delivered from the perspective that all writers can improve their writing, so that students with diverse writing skills will benefit by taking it. There is a required writing assessment in the first week of classes, and students must pass the threshold mark to continue in the course. Those below the threshold will be de-enrolled from ISP100H5 and advised to enroll in ISP010H5: Basics of Writing in English (BoWiE). Positions: Up to 15 positions available in Fall 2026 and up to 18 positions available in Winter 2027. Estimated Course Enrolment: 30 Estimated TA Support: N/A  Class Schedule: Various times Monday-Friday between 9:00am-9:00pm (in-person). The course meets weekly in-person for 3 hours. Sessional Dates of Appointment: August 31, 2026- December 31, 2027 (Fall Session) & January 1, 2027 – April 30, 2027 (Winter Session). Salery:

  • Sessional Lecturer I: $9,997.48- Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term: $10,699.22- Sessional Lecturer II: $10,699.22- Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term: $10,953.96- Sessional Lecturer III: $10,953.96- Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term: $11,228.90 Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. Minimum Qualifications:

A completed or nearly completed doctoral degree in Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, or related discipline. PhD in Writing Studies is preferred. A minimum of 1 year of experience teaching academic writing courses at the university or college level (e.g., first-year composition or similar). Demonstrated engagement with professional development and/or scholarly activities related to academic writing. Demonstrated experience using active learning strategies in the university or college classrooms. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience working with first-year university students. Demonstrated experience working with multilingual writers. Demonstrated experience teaching multi-section courses with standardized grading schemes at the university or college level.

Description of Duties:

Must be available August 31, 2026 from 10am-4pm for in-person onboarding and orientation meeting at UTM campus. Attending up to 10 hours of in-person onboarding and course delivery meetings. Teaching weekly classes using active learning strategies. Marking and commenting on student writing (during the term and beyond if an extension of time is granted by the university officials). Submitting grades to university officials. Holding regular office hours.
