The Public Guardian and Trustee is seeking a confident, ethical, and well-organized individual for an interesting and challenging Accounting Trust Officer position in our Accounting Unit.

The Accounting Unit provides accounting, investment, and tax expertise to other units within the office; ensures client incomes and expenses are recorded and allocated correctly; assists with the preparation of yearly audited financial statements; and manages the quarterly distribution of common fund income.

Using your extensive accounting, investment, and tax knowledge and experience, you will be responsible for:

  • Preparing personal income tax plans and returns for clients;
  • Working with financial institutions and/or financial advisors to ensure clients’ segregated investment assets are appropriately managed;
  • Providing direction to financial assistants in the Accounting Unit;
  • Acting as a backup to the Accountant position as required;
  • Performing bank reconciliations;
  • Creating and maintaining complex spreadsheets;
  • Reviewing, correcting, and approving complex estate accountings, and assisting with client releases;
  • Advising trust officers in other units on generally accepted accounting principles and best practices;
  • Providing information to and responding to inquiries from the Provincial Auditor.

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, personal income taxation, and a thorough understanding of investments is critical to this position. The successful candidate must be willing to learn the more complex duties of the Accountant role. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with other branch units, income and service providers, and financial institutions.

The knowledge and skills required for this position would typically be obtained through a university degree in Commerce or Business Administration with an accounting focus, or a similar degree-level program, supplemented by several years of relevant experience in Canadian personal income taxation, accounting, and investment management.
