Your Opportunity Reporting to the Director, Risk Management & Pool Operations and under the general supervision of the Assistant Facility Manager, the Pool Supervisor works within the aquatics team to provide front line leadership to ensure a safe & secure environment for patrons, students, members and staff. The Pool Supervisor plays an integral role in ensuring the facilities and equipment is properly maintained, including pool water chemistry. The incumbent conducts routine inspections, follows procedures for opening/closing work areas, ensures compliance with legislated regulations and occupational safety, trains and directs the work of aquatic staff. The Pool Supervisor is responsible for response and leadership in emergency situations that take place within the pool enclosures, the community change rooms and also within the Athletic Centre or other designated facility and on-site facility leadership during special events

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Checking that certifications and training are current for staff and/or rental groups
  • Ensuring others adhere to legislated regulations for swimming pools
  • Following rules and procedural instructions when preparing chemical mixtures and/or solutions and when testing water chemistry for swimming pool operations
  • Applying established standards when responding to emergencies
  • Advising students on the interpretation of rules and regulations regarding the use of space and organizing events on campus
  • Providing CPR intervention and treatment to individuals suffering from acute physical illness or injury
  • Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to occupational safety precautions
  • Performing administrative duties related to the aquatic environment.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Facility Management or related field, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Standard First Aid, CPR-C, AED, and ORFA, Certified Aquatic Technician or LSS Certified Pool Operator required.
  • Minimum two years lifeguarding experience, preferably in a university setting.
  • Minimum two years supervisory experience at a comparable aquatic facility, preferable in a university setting.
  • Thorough understanding of Ontario Health Regulations for Swimming Pools and accident prevention
  • Experience troubleshooting pool and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to deal with difficult people and handle conflict situations with excellent listening, de-escalation, and resolution skills
  • Strong leadership skills and able to perform and lead others under stressful condition (an emergency)
  • Thorough understanding of Ontario Health Regulations for Swimming Pools and accident prevention
  • Tactful enforcement of health regulations and policy
  • Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to equity and diversity issues in keeping with the Faculty's missions and goals.
  • Must attend wet screening (lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR and AED skills) to demonstrate that skills exceed the minimum standards of the Lifesaving Society and other certifying organizations.
  • Must provide proof that there are no relevant police records that would impact working in a position of leadership with children and vulnerable clients as set out by the Lifesaving Society.
  • Must provide proof of immunization against Hepatitis B virus
  • Must meet minimum vision standards for lifeguards: visual acuity of 20/20 corrected with at least one eye and minimum of 20/40 corrected in the poorer eye, and peripheral vision (the area to either side of and slightly behind the eyes) of 120 degrees with both eyes used together.

Assets (Nonessential)

  • Experience in aquatic instruction and/or supervisory experience are strong assets.
  • Advanced lifeguarding and aquatic instruction certifications are strong assets.
  • Understanding of high performance sport, and aquatics in particular
  • Understanding of and demonstrated strong commitment to excellent customer service
