About the role

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Project Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Protecting Every Pregnancy Canada (Pep-C) Lab is aimed at preventing infection-related maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. It brings together care providers and thought leaders from Obstetrics & Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Community Health Sciences and Patient-Oriented Research.

The Project Manager coordinates and supervises administrative processes of the lab. The Project Manager provides clear direction to staff in a fast changing environment and is responsible for making complex decisions related to the research lab.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project & Research Management:

  • Develop project timelines, monitor project deadlines and outcomes, and complete project closeout processes
  • Ensure meticulous budget oversight, including allocating, monitoring, and reporting to funding bodies
  • Manage activities and research tasks with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Present project progress at conferences and meetings to encourage collaboration
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of papers for publication
  • Coordinate the assembly and submission of provincial and national grants to obtain funding

Staff Management:

  • Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
  • Manage the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff.
  • Perform and engage staff in annual performance reviews
  • Manage performance and development of individual team members to maximize success and motivation
  • When required, perform disciplinary actions, including terminations
  • Oversees the complete range of human resource management for operational staff
  • Ensures all staff have a required certifications and training to meet requirements of the team
  • Coach and mentor students and staff

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Relevant Post-baccalaureate certificate or degree required
  • 8-10 years of project management experience
  • Knowledge of research methods including GCP
  • Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of research administrative procedures is required
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
  • Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
  • Hold a strong understanding of the University environment including eFin, IRISS, HR & Legal Services
  • Knowledgeable in grant writing and in writing medical/scientific research protocols
  • Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication
  • Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
