Charge Technologist - Interventional Radiology

Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager, the IR Charge Technologist’s key responsibilities include performing clinical duties and patient examinations in their assigned modality, day-to-day planning, organizing and coordinating workflow in their assigned modality. In addition, in collaboration with the Manager, the Charge Technologist will participate in department budgeting as required and be accountable for operating within the approved budget. The Charge Technologist will assist with new equipment selection and be responsible for maintaining inventory. The Charge Technologist will be responsible for assessing the staffing needs, including advising the Manager with overtime and vacation request approvals, and working within allotted FTE limits. The Charge Technologist will ensure that all work of assigned staff and students meets accuracy and reliability standards and requirements. Duties are conducted in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the related College or Professional Body.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of a recognized, accredited Radiography education program.
- Undergraduate degree in related field preferred, post graduate education an asset.
- Completion of a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) program.
- Demonstrated ongoing professional development. Completion of CAMRT Certificate in Interventional Radiology required.
Experience
- At least five (5) years experience as an Interventional Radiology technologist in a hospital setting.
- Previous experience in planning and conducting education and training preferred.
- Proven ability to communicate directly with staff, external and internal partners.
- Demonstrated leadership skills. Previous leadership in a Charge role or experience leading a team in a project or initiative preferred.
Competencies
- Working knowledge of the standards of practice of related field.
- Working knowledge of the Regulated Health Professionals Act.
- Working knowledge of Safety Code 35.
- Demonstrated ability in the following competencies:

- Registered in good standing with College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).
- Membership with Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) preferred.
Responsibilities
- Performs all of the duties of an IR technologist.
- Assists in the development, maintenance and annual review of policies and procedures and imaging protocol manuals for assigned modality.
- Ensure the IR equipment functions correctly and is maintained properly by maintaining an effective quality assurance program for the facility, including required testing and record keeping.
- Ensure that the equipment is used correctly, and maintained properly, by competent personnel who are properly trained in the safe operation of the equipment.
- Ensure that inexperienced personnel, including students, operate the equipment only under the direct supervision of a licensed, certified, and experienced X-ray equipment operator until competence in a given clinical procedure is achieved, at which time supervision should be indirectly provided by a supervisor available on-site when needed.
- Establish documented safe operating procedures for the equipment and ensure that operating staff are adequately instructed in them.
- Promulgate documented rules of radiation safety and ensure that staff are made aware of them through training.
- Develop and maintain orientation package for new hire technologists and oversee training.
- Monitor and maintain the work of the technologists in the assigned modality and provide guidance to staff regarding equipment performance issues or clarification of imaging practices that impact patient care.
- Oversee and organize the workflow of the technologists assigned to their modality, ensuring that department processes and protocols are followed.
- Provide input into the budgeting process and is responsible for operating within approved controllable budget.
- Ensures scheduling of staff within approved FTE allotment.
- Participate in the selection of equipment and supplies. Monitors and orders inventory of supplies on a regular basis.
- Liaise with bookings office to coordinate patient appointments and booking schedule as necessary.
- Liaise with radiologists and other hospital staff to ensure that patients and tests are carried out in a timely fashion.
- Represent the modality on committees and projects as required.
- Organize, carry out and document modality staff meetings.
- Participate in and advocate for continuous quality improvement initiatives within the department.
- Monitor preventative maintenance program and ensure accommodation of patient bookings around PM Schedule. Includes ensuring that field service is kept informed of equipment issues.
- Coordinate routine and emergency equipment service while maintaining equipment maintenance logs.
- Report all safety concerns to Manager, Operations Director, and Clinical Director.
- Collection, submission and monitoring of wait-time hours as required.
- Liaise with modality lead radiologist to maintain and adjust system specific protocols and external partners.
- Participate in RFP process(s) as required.
- Liaise with applications support when required following the introduction of an upgrade or new software.
- Participate in the peer interview process as required.
- Liaise with management, Clinical Informatics and radiologists to maintain and create modality specific MEDITECH exam/procedure dictionaries and scheduling templates.
- Ensure new products meet contract agreements and are approved through the hospital procurement PESC committee.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the job classification as required.
