About the role
NHS TAYSIDE LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICE GP IN ROHALLION CLINIC & MURRAY ROYAL HOSPITAL Applications are invited for a post working as a General Practitioner at Rohallion Secure Care Clinic and Murray Royal Hospital, Perth. This is a 2-session permanent post which is becoming available due to the upcoming transfer of the Learning Disability (LD) Inpatient Service from Dundee to Perth.
The successful candidate will run a GP clinic to cater to the physical health needs of people who are cared for in the Rohallion Secure Care Clinic and Murray Royal Hospital. Primarily they will be responsible for the physical health needs of people with LD who are in Rannoch Ward, Murray Royal Hospital and Faskally Ward, Rohallion Secure Care Clinic. They may be asked to make prospective cover arrangements with GP colleagues caring for patients under the care of Forensic Psychiatry who are already in post.
In your role as a GP, you will provide expert physical healthcare within a specialist environment, managing complex comorbidities, supporting medication optimisation, and contributing to safe, person‑centred care for individuals with high support needs. This includes leading on the identification, initiation, and interpretation of physical health investigations, and ensuring appropriate follow‑up, particularly where diagnostic assessment is complicated by communication difficulties or atypical presentations. The most suitable candidates will have an appreciation for the challenges present in investigating and diagnosing conditions in patients who may be unable to effectively communicate their symptoms and will adopt a person‑centred and holistic approach to these challenges. Candidates should also have some awareness of the interaction between physical health – particularly excess morbidity and mortality – and learning disability.
The successful candidate will provide a brief physical health update for patients prior to any 6-monthly mental health Care Programme Approach meetings. They will work with Nursing colleagues to ensure the delivery of the Annual Health Check for People with Learning Disabilities as mandated by The Annual Health Checks for People with Learning Disabilities (Scotland) Direction 2023 . The job also involves liaising with, and referral to, secondary care colleagues as appropriate. This post does not include any out of hours work.
The candidate will not be expected to treat any mental health related issues of the patients in the clinic but will be expected to identify any such issues as are raised and redirect these back to the patient’s team. Resident doctor-level medical support is provided on all wards for more urgent medical issues outwith GP clinic times, and for assisting with any tasks as directed by the GP such as phlebotomy, ECGs, etc. The clinic is additionally served by 24-hour on-call resident doctor medical support covering the entire Murray Royal Hospital site.
