Positions are available across multiple engineering disciplines and would be based out of our Edmonds office in Burnaby,

BC.

What you'll do

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team working on exciting and impactful projects across BC Hydro’s transmission system.

Opportunities are available in the following areas:

Lines Engineering

  • Provide engineering support for hydroelectric facilities, high-voltage transmission, substations, and distribution systems.
  • Engage in engineering design activities such as route selection, material selection and approval, preparation of standards

and specifications and use of design and modelling software.

  • Conduct studies and analyze transmission line electrical parameters (clearances, insulation coordination, electromagnetic

effects, and grounding) and overseeing safety and workability requirements.

Stations Engineering

  • Develop physical layout of substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV. This includes equipment layout,

grounding, lightning, lighting, power cables and station service supply systems.

  • Impart knowledge and professional development of engineers - including maintaining familiarity with relevant standards

(CSA, IEEE, IEC, etc.) and demonstrating CAD skills (AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault, etc.).

  • Support specification, evaluation, acquisition and quality assurance (QA) of major electrical equipment and provide

construction support services.

Civil Engineering (Structural, Civil or Geotechnical)

  • Deliver Structural, Foundation, and Geotechnical design geotechnical services for transmission circuits, stations, and

telecommunication projects.

  • Perform engineering modeling and analysis, geohazard assessments, geotechnical analysis, seismic analysis, tower/pole

and associated foundation design, underground vaults, and geotechnical field monitoring.

Protection & Control

  • Use Building Information Modelling (BIM) Software to design Protection and Control systems for existing and soon to be

designed Transmission Substations.

  • Develop system protection and control philosophies, architectures, and functional specifications, including providing

configurations and settings for protection relays on the transmission, generation, and distribution systems.

  • Test and configure legacy and emergent technology communication devices for various layers of Operational Technology

(OT) networks.

  • Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and emergency operations of the power system.

Telecommunication

  • Develops and analyzes safe engineering telecom solutions, acts as the Professional of Record (PoR) for designs, and

reviews external designs as the Owner's Engineer (OE) for technical compliance.

  • Supports Project Management in meeting safety, cost, quality, and time objectives; resolves complex site queries and

design problems; and provides technical assistance and construction support in the field.

  • Ensures designs adhere to BC Hydro standards and all regulatory requirements (EGBC), and contributes to the resolution

of highly technical issues through independent study.

  • Requires prior experience with core telecom technologies, including IP/MPLS, DACS, SONET, Microwave, Site

Selections, Antennas/Tower infrastructure, and grounding.

The general responsibilities required for the above positions are as follows:

  • Engage in project coordination, design, contract/construction management, maintenance, and emergency response.
  • Act as Professional of Record or Owner’s Engineer on various projects.
  • Must possess demonstrated excellent leadership, communication, and technical writing skills, complemented by a good

understanding of project management processes.

  • Conduct discipline specific studies, attend site visits and coordinate with multiple disciplines within the engineering and

project team.

  • Review and confirm compliance to BC Hydro Engineering Standards and applicable engineering practices.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Integrated, or Civil Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.
  • Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Relevant engineering experience:
  • Senior Engineer: 8+ years
  • Engineer 2: 4+ years
  • Engineer 1: Up to 4 years (must be registered as EIT with EGBC)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and seek guidance when needed.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.

  • The salary range for each successful candidate will depend on the level the individual is assessed at. Salary would be

determined based on years of experience, quality of experience, education and internal equity:

Sr. Engineer - $107,010 - $135,330

Engineer 2 - $87,720 - $110,940

Engineer 1 - $72,460 - $91,650

What else you should know

  • Note: although the job posting indicates one (1) position, we are recruiting for multiple vacancies and levels of experience.
  • Applicants will be assessed based on: standing with EGBC, years of experience, relevancy and quality of experience, as

well as their core competencies.

  • Occasional travel across BC is required.
  • Internationally trained engineers may be considered if eligible for EGBC registration.
  • LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) may be considered for applicants who are eligible for either their P.Eng or EIT

registration with EGBC.

  • Jobs would be based at BC Hydro's Edmonds campus in Burnaby, BC in a 'hybrid' role, requiring in office work 3 days/

week.
