WE’RE LOOKING FOR A SHEET METAL TECHNICIAN
POSITION LOCATION: FORT ERIE, ONTARIO
The Sheet Metal Technician is a highly skilled, multi-faceted professional. They fabricate flat metal blanks into formed components, applying extensive knowledge of the physical properties of metals and a critical eye for detail to ensure they meet precise dimensional and physical requirements. They perform the assembly of these components through mechanical, chemical, or other means into completed units that satisfy dimensional, physical, electrical, and optical specifications. Critical thinking skills are essential for both fabrication and assembly tasks.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Manufacturing Detailed Parts
- Fabricate parts from raw stock on standard sheet metal equipment such as shears, brakes, and presses.
- Plan set up and forming of all types of sheet metal stock common to aircraft manufacture, by setting and aligning various dies and forms and bending, joggling, channeling, corrugating or forming of angles, including the calculation of bend allowances.
- Work from blueprints, sketches, and standardized work instructions, and using standard sheet metal equipment such as shears and brakes to fabricate parts.
- Perform sheet metal assembly operations that include a variety of complex parts, details, and assemblies.
- Interpret drawings of completed parts and assemblies to develop tooling, assembly requirements and sequences to achieve the final product.
- Deburring and preparing raw materials for processing prior to forming.
- Use of chemical compounds as specified in drawings, production orders or other documents to bond, insulate, protect and coat components / assemblies.
- Layout, fabricate, assemble, install and rework a wide variety of semi-complicated parts and assemblies for experimental, production, and prototype assemblies.
- Construct simple checking and holding fixtures and make simple templates and form blocks.
- Assemble semi-complicated assemblies, perform riveting and close tolerance drilling and reaming.
- Operate and use hand tools as required.
- Assist the Engineering Department in the development and manufacture of prototype parts for new products.
Maintaining Records/Reports & Staying on Schedule
- Ensure problems or required changes with components/assemblies are brought to the attention of the department supervisor.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Completion of High School or an equivalent
- Aircraft Structures course would be an asset.
Experience
- 3 years’ experience working in the assembly of metal components in an aerospace setting.
- Experience using tools such as a bandsaw, sheet metal brake (manual + NC), punches, shear, sander, grinder, form blocks, shrinkers, rollers, drill press, heat treating equipment, deburring tools, countersinking tools, reamers, and riveters.
Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities
- Installing and removing rivets.
- Extensive knowledge of fasteners and hardware; their selection, requirements, properties and use.
- Excellent time management skills meet approaching deadlines.
- Multitasking skills and being able to prioritize.
- Independent and the ability to work under broad supervision.
- Customer oriented.
- Flexible and able to adapt to a fast paced environment.
- Exemplary problem-solving skills.
- Highly motivated self-starter.
- Print reading.
- Metrology.
- Mathematical ability.
