JOB OVERVIEW:

Fraser Valley Building Supplies (FVBS) is the largest RONA dealer in Western Canada. We are a growing business with 250+ employees across 8 locations in British Columbia.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for the management of financial accounting and reporting together with establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems. We are a dynamic business in a growth phase, and we are looking for a candidate who possesses the right attitude and skill set to work well in a team environment. This is an in-office position to provide full support to the finance team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Partner with the CFO to coordinate annual year-end reporting and ensure timely, accurate provision of financial information.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, intercompany transactions, and tax filings (GST/PST/Corporate).
  • Prepare and deliver insightful financial analyses to department heads to support decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain monthly reporting on salesperson performance and sales snapshots.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial and operational reports as requested by senior management.

Team Management & Development

  • Directly manage a team of five in Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable, providing guidance, coaching, and equitable workload distribution.
  • Serve as a role model by promoting best practices, proactive problem-solving, and a collaborative work culture.
  • Provide vacation coverage/back-up support for AP team members when needed.
  • Collaborating with divisional and store leadership to improve process efficiencies

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Establish and maintain effective internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets.
  • Monitor AP metrics in collaboration with the CFO, implementing remediation plans as required.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and timely completion of tax filings.

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Oversee the full AP cycle, ensuring invoices and payments are processed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain vendor accounts in good standing, resolve discrepancies, and foster positive relationships with external vendors and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee reconciliations of bank accounts, credit cards, and staff expense reports.
  • Ensure accurate vendor file management and efficient processing of outgoing payments.

Process Improvement & Systems Optimization

  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and strengthen effectiveness across financial operations.
  • Optimize use of the ERP system for accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvements in reporting, compliance, and vendor relations.

General & Administrative

  • Support Accounts Payable functions during year-end close.
  • Undertake other administrative duties as required to support the finance team and overall business operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Accounting Diploma, Degree, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing a team in a finance/accounting environment.
  • Demonstrated success in a high-volume Accounts Payable setting.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, vlookup).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) with the ability to manage conflict constructively.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with strong judgment, initiative, and a collaborative mindset.
  • Positive, professional demeanor with a commitment to fostering teamwork and continuous improvement.
