About the role

The Environmental Engineer in Training is responsible for their work, report writing and overseeing assigned investigations of environmental concerns of residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings after a disastrous incident.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct site assessments of damaged buildings for environmental concerns and issues.
  • Identify and handle suspect hazardous materials or contaminants safely.
  • Record laboratory or field data, including visual and olfactory observations, sample collection data, field instrument data and photographs.
  • Conduct bulk material sampling for Designated Substance Surveys.
  • Perform air quality testing for airborne asbestos content.
  • Perform mould assessments with air quality testing for airborne fungal spores.
  • Conduct bacterial swab testing following contaminated water damage restoration.
  • Assess for smoke or water migration utilizing engineering judgement to assist with loss mitigation and restoration requirements.
  • Collect combustion by-product samples utilizing tape lifts, air, and vacuum sampling.
  • Prepare and package environmental samplers for shipping or testing.
  • Interpret laboratory results.
  • Develop and design the scope of restoration to address property damage.
  • Produce fully detailed reports of findings and recommendations in a timely manner. Foster a positive and productive work environment, ensuring clear communication and collaboration across teams.
  • Ensure compliance with governing regulations, applicable guidelines, industry standards and company expectations.
  • Function as a liaison with clients, contractors, building owners, and building officials on complex environmental matters and issues requiring resolution.
  • Assist in identifying and assessing building materials and assemblies with respect to fire-resistance ratings, fire separations, and applicable code requirements to support restoration, reconstruction, and permitting activities.
  • Collaborate with team members and manage time to consistently meet strict deadlines. Embody and promote the values of Element, acting as a brand ambassador for the organization.

Qualifications

  • Education: o Bachelor of Science or Engineering in a relevant technical discipline. o Environmental diploma in a related field an asset.
  • Experience: o 2+ years experience in related field, which includes sampling and testing.
  • Skills and Knowledge: o Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Physical Requirements: o Ability to climb ladders and potentially lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Licensing & Certifications: o Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and access to a properly insured vehicle.
  • Communication Skills: o Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to both internal and external stakeholders.

Work Location: Office based in Burlington, Ontario plus site visits.

Salary Range: $70,000. - $80,000. based on qualifications
