POSITION TITLE: Weekend Shift Lead Hand

LOCATION: Collingwood, Ontario

SHIFTS: Weekend Shift (Friday to Sunday, 6:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. – 3x12 hour shifts)

MacLean Engineering is looking for skilled and experienced Lead Handto join our growing team in Collingwood, Ontario This is a great opportunity to be part of a growing team. About the Position: The Lead hand is responsible for advocating on behalf of the company and cooperatively supporting all company policies, procedures, initiatives, and direction, The Lead Hand is responsible for a) assisting the Production Supervisor with the execution of specific administrative and Supervisory tasks, b) providing “Second in Command” back-up during absence of the Supervisor, and c) for providing direct labor capacity within the department of their discipline when not executing the duties and responsibilities of a) or b) above. This position requires the following proficiencies:

  • Assist the Plant Manager and/or Shift Supervisor;
    • Monitor work center priorities, and assign work orders to workers based upon priority, environment, and skill set.
    • Ensure “work order notes” are applied to any work orders that cannot be completed.
    • Analyze Current Orders Report to uncover “stagnant’s” and move same to next work center.
    • Prepare Saw and Burn priority lists as required to keep Machine Operators fully utilized.
    • Review labor bookings from previous day to ensure labor has been booked in full and without error, document any issues found, and communicate with Materials department to correct any errors found.
    • Monitor work ethic, performance and productivity of workers, and report any anomalies found to Supervisor.
    • Coach, train and mentor as required to enhance quality, efficiencies and utilization.
    • Document any non-conformances found during the shift, any corrective action taken, and communicate same to Manufacturing Engineering department for further analysis.
    • Assist Supervisor with the preparation of performance reviews, providing input as to worker competence, performance and potential.
    • Leading by example, ensure a safe working culture is evident within all, by personally adhering to all policies and procedures, ensuring co-workers adhere to all company policies and procedures without exception, formally identifying unsafe conditions, and assisting Shift Supervisor with execution of permanent corrective action to correct any unsafe conditions found.
    • Ensure all equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
  • Provide “Second in Command” back-up during absence of the Shift Supervisor. In addition to above:
    • Take all reasonable precautions to protect the health and safety of all workers and contractors working within the facility.
    • Arrange for the immediate first aid of any injured worker, ensuring transport to hospital and Ministry of Labor notification where applicable.
    • Investigate any accident or injury and prepare incident report detailing same.
    • Ensure workers are always fully utilized, working productively and efficiently. Document any issues found and communicate same to Shift Supervisor.
    • Document time card exceptions, and vacation requests, and ensure ADP is up to date and approved prior to payroll deadline.
  • Provide direct labor capacity within the work center of your discipline:
    • When Shift Supervisor is present, and for approximately 50% of shift duration, work within the department of your discipline. (i.e. A Welder will weld, a Machinist will machine, a Mechanic will assemble, etc.)

About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with the following qualifications:

  • Diploma or Degree in related discipline is preferred
  • Associated trade certificate or licenses is preferred
  • Five (5) + years’ experience working as a Machinist, Welder or other Skilled Trade within a metal fabrication or similar manufacturing environment
  • One to Two (1-2) years’ leadership experience is an asset
  • Previous experience promoting a safe work culture, communicating goals, and engaging and motivating individuals is an asset
