BCIT’sDigital Arts, Media and Designdepartment within theSchool of Business + Mediaoffers a range of programs in the areas of Animation and Gaming, Web and Mobile, and Communication and Graphics. We are currently seeking atemporary, part-time (0.2FTE) Instructorto teach full-time students in theDiploma in 3D Modeling, Art and Animation, from May to August 2026.
Duties & Responsibilities
The instructor assignment is for:
-MDAA****1542 Lighting and Rendering 1 (20%)

In this course, students will be introduced to the principles of lighting, shading and rendering in 3D. Through hands-on practice, students will set up lighting in various 3D environments. Students analyze the role of light in different art forms (classic to modern) and practice recreating those conditions in a virtual environment. This course also examines the basics of rendering a 3D environment using industry-standard applications. The overlying goals of this course are to develop the practical skills to light 3D scenes, render images sequences and videos, and to develop the artistic skills to analyze lighting in the real world and re-create it in 3D.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS**:**
- Diploma or Degree in 3D Animation, Game Art, Visual Effects, Computer Graphics, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional industry experience.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in lighting, look development, rendering, or environment art within the film, animation, visual effects, or game development industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in 3D lighting and rendering workflows using Autodesk Maya and industry-standard render engines such as Redshift or Arnold
- Familiarity with editing and post-process tools such as Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve
- Strong understanding of lighting fundamentals, including light types, global illumination, contrast, mood, and visual composition.
- Experience creating lighting setups for characters, interiors, and exterior environments in 3D scenes.
- Strong understanding of camera fundamentals and composition, including framing, movement, and cinematic presentation for rendered scenes.
- Experience rendering image sequences and video output suitable for presentation or portfolio work.
- Familiarity with colour management workflows, including linear workflow concepts and ACES colour space.
- Experience working with HDRI lighting and environmental lighting techniques.
- Strong understanding of render layers, AOVs, and rendering workflows used to troubleshoot and refine final images.
- Ability to analyze lighting in photography, film, and art history and translate those lighting conditions into 3D scenes.
- Demonstrated ability to teach foundational lighting principles and provide constructive critique to help students improve lighting and visual storytelling.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support students from a range of skill levels.

Previous post-secondary teaching or mentoring experience.

Demonstrated industry success with appropriate and current experience and skills in the entire 3D pipeline including: 3D Modeling, Animating, Rigging, Texturing, Lighting, and Rendering

Salary Range
$65,045 - $113,545 per annum
Additional Salary Information
