About the role

Reports To: Principal

Position Type: Full-Time/Permanent

This position will be working out of Tsay Keh Dene Nation. As the Guidance Counselor, he/she shall

provide support to the student(s) in the elementary and secondary grades. The Guidance Counselor

shall work with students both in a group setting and on a one-on-one basis. If needed, the Guidance

Counselor will refer the student(s) to other professionals in the community or, if applicable, outside

organizations to ensure the student(s) needs are met. Referrals shall be made to the Guidance

Counselor directly from the teacher(s) through staff meetings or on a needed basis. The Guidance

Counselor shall be responsible for maintaining confidentiality and updating student(s) files. The

Guidance Counselor shall also provide the School Principal with monthly reports and work plans for the

following month.

EDUCATION & TRAINING DEPARTMENT:

  • Attend school staff meetings when available to review referred student's needs.

  • Be available/open door policy while scheduled to be at the school.

  • Hold student activities groups that are inclusive of all students.

  • Create a safe environment for students for one-on-one counselling/assessment sessions.

  • Provide individual counselling and group guidance to help students cope effectively with

personal, social, academic, career, and family concerns.

  • Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs

and abilities of students.

  • Update and maintain confidential student records.

  • Attend and assist when necessary with TKD community and school events,

  • Interview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan

of action with other team members,

  • Work as part of a team in developing a plan and providing individual and group

counselling/referrals in response to school-wide crises.

  • Maintain an ongoing liaison with the community agencies and other resources to meet student

needs; refers parents and students to agencies when appropriate.

  • Counsel students whose behaviour, school progress, or mental or physical impairment indicate a

need for assistance, diagnosing students' problems and arranging for needed services or referral

to outside agencies for diagnosing.

  • Develop and review service plans in consultation with clients, and perform follow-ups assessing

the quantity and quality of services provided

  • Participate in the creation of Individual Education Plans for high needs students in the school.

  • Advocate for the child/youth; liaising with parents, school, and professional supports to ensure

the child's needs are met.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Principal.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree required - Psychology, Social Work, or relative field, from an accredited

college or university.

  • Minimum two years of mental health work experience preferred.

  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.

  • Strong psychosocial assessment skills.

  • Excellent time management and prioritizing skills.

  • Excellent communication skills when interacting with professionals or clients.

  • Writing skills for reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals required.

  • Effective presentation skills and ability to respond to questions from groups of managers,

patients, clients, and the general public.

  • Ability to define problems, gather data, organize facts, and make valid conclusions.

  • High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning, and discretion.

  • Criminal record checks clearance.
