Marketing within UCalgary Continuing Education is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Instructional Designer for approximately 12 months.
The Instructional Designer reports to the Academic Innovation Manager and will work closely with various team members within the unit to support initiatives related to the implementation of educational and instructional solutions for adult learning.
The primary purpose is to support the development innovative adult learning courses and programs. This role focuses on creating engaging, effective learning solutions tailored to meet the evolving needs of adult learners. The Instructional Designer will carry out needs assessment and design analysis by advising and proposing plans, curriculum mapping structure, methodologies, deliverables, and instructional technology.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Apply adult learning theories to the design and delivery of instructional materials, ensuring engagement and knowledge retention.
- Design and produce curriculum, training, and instructional material for online and in-person learning using project management fundamentals.
- Support the SMEs content creation to transform it into learning experiences following the Learning Services standards and requirements (OLC).
- Ensure consistency across content/courses/ learning outcomes/assessments/rubrics in terms of instructional design, based on project requirements.
- Assist with the instructional multimedia production of content and supporting materials.
- Identify and advise on present and future instructional trends.
- Support the design and implement corporate training programs that meet client-specific goals and contribute to revenue growth.
- Develop and implement quality assurance processes to ensure the consistency and effectiveness of training programs.
- Test training materials and write documentation to support learning methodologies for students and instructors.
- Collaborate for video scriptwriting, preparation of audio clips, voice-overs, mock-ups.
- Research, analyze and synthesize information and trends to support educational projects and initiatives.
- Stay current with advancements in instructional design, technology, and adult education to continuously enhance training offerings.
- Provide how-to training sessions and consultation for instructors, students and ContEd staff
- Interpret instructional needs to enable instructors, students, and staff to effectively use and incorporate adult learning methodologies.
- Research, evaluate and recommend the viability of new trend developments.
- Relate to instructors/faculty and bridge understanding of andragogy to learning online and in person.
- Mentor and coach instructors and facilitators on best practices in adult education and instructional design.
- Build and maintain relationships with diverse engaged groups, ex. corporate clients, industry partners, and internal parties to support training initiatives.
- Integrate cultural competency and inclusive practices into all aspects of instructional design and delivery.
- Perform record management in compliance with UCalgary policies
- Create appropriate project documentation, ex. Project briefs, plans ,instructional templates for quality assurance, etc.
- Perform other administrative duties as required, such as data analysis from Qualtrics, Google Analytics, etc.
- Lead projects aimed at improving instructional design processes and integrating new technologies into training programs.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices in instructional design and adult education.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Teaching and Learning, Instructional Design, Distance Learning or related field
- Minimum of three years experience working with needs assessment, curriculum evaluation, distance learning, curriculum mapping, applied research, learning management systems In-
- depth knowledge of adult learning principles, including andragogy, experiential learning, and transformative learning methodologies.
- A strong knowledge of collaborative tools such as OneDrive, Teams, Qualtrics and Zoom, and Microsoft Professional Office (Word online, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Experience, knowledge, and proficiency in a learning technologies such as Zoom, YuJa, Articulate Rise, Top Hat.
- Demonstrated the ability to integrate learning methodologies and technologies to support effective teaching and learning practices in a Continuing Education (adult learning) context.
- Minimum of three years experience with workshop design, facilitation, and presentation for adult learners.
- Experience in designing and delivering corporate training programs an asset.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the development of revenue-generating educational programs, workshops, and courses that align with labour market demands.
- Knowledge in evaluating the effectiveness of training programs through metrics, feedback, and continuous improvement processes.
- Ability to foster partnerships with different stakeholders to identify training needs and customize solutions that drive business outcomes.
- Skilled in leveraging technology to enhance learning experiences, including the integration of interactive tools, multimedia content, and virtual learning environments.
- Have strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate ability to complete project deliverables, focusing on producing highly effective results within the timelines and assuring quality standards (project management).
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills and the know-how to present ideas to various audiences.
- Prioritize and execute tasks in a rapidly changing work environment.
- Have excellent time management, organizational and interpersonal skills, and strong attention to detail.
