The Opportunity
RVS invites applications for a continuing, full-time (35 hrs/wk) Student Support Worker position to work a 10-month school calendar schedule for our Learning Supports team starting immediately.
The successful candidate must have a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operators License in order to provide services to all RVS locations.
The Student Support Worker will be required to bring to life strategies within the student’s behaviour support plan across a variety of learning environments. This may include proactive strategies to predict and prevent challenging behaviours, as well as implement safety plans when physical aggression does occur, One-to-One support is provided within the context of constructive relationships that engage and empower students and, as much as possible, promote their care and welfare, and uphold their individual rights.
Responsibilities Include

Under the supervision of a teacher, or collaborative support team, document and monitor student progress
-
Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
-
Focusing on reducing, changing, and/or preventing the behaviours which place the student at risk.
-
Provides support to maintain student safety when a student is demonstrating significant trauma-impacted stress response, extreme emotional and/or behavioural dysregulation and/or acute levels of risk.
-
Reinforces strategies as directed by the teacher(s) and identified in Personalized Learning Plan(PLP), Individualized Program Plans (IPP), Behaviour Support Plans (BSP), safety plans, and medical plans, in programming for the diverse needs of students.

Implements teacher led modifications of IPPs and PLPs to meet the learning needs of the individual student(s).

Implements behaviour management strategies for students as needed
-
Records observations and other data on behavioural challenges and creates records that can be used to support positive behaviour strategies for students as directed by the teacher(s).

Supervises students under the direction of the teacher.
-
Motivates and engages students to encourage the development of their positive behavioural, social, and emotional well-being, in consultation with the teacher(s).
-
Provide support to maintain student’s safety when a student is demonstrating significant trauma-impacted stress responses, extreme emotional and/or behavioral dysregulation, and/or acute levels of risk
-
Support students with emotional regulation and insight regarding emotional and behavioral responses
-
Assist students with the development and maintenance of decision making and problem-solving skills
-
Assist in mitigation of safety risks
-
Under the direction of a teacher, assist in activity planning that meet the recreational, educational, and/or therapeutic needs of the student
-
Support students who require assistance in building skills, related to confidence, emotional management, increasing self-sufficiency and address barriers to success
-
Under the direction of a teacher, assists students individually, and/or in groups, by carrying out plans and activities as assigned by the teacher
-
Acts as support to enhance student learning and inclusiveness in the school community, through student programs directed by teachers
-
Provides assistance to students as identified in their individualized plans including those students who require additional types of support including personal, medical care (as assigned), and safety needs
-
Assists student(s) to achieve the goals and objectives planned by the teacher
-
Assists in the observation and assessment of students as requested
-
Assists in student independence and positive peer interaction
-
Supports students with routine personal care activities such as toileting, movement, personal hygiene, eating, drinking and feeding:
-
Meals including preparing, heating and supporting student eating and drinking
-
Personal hygiene including grooming, dressing, toileting independence, washing and brushing teeth
-
Assistance for students that require partial or full toileting support, including transportation and toileting as appropriate, using a least restrictive approach
-
Providing lifts and positioning as required
-
Assist in exercising, adaptive physical education, range of motion programs, fine and gross motor skills development as directed by a specialist and monitored by a teacher
-
Supervise students with mobility issues according to safety precautions and routines (transportation, lifts, accommodations during recess, field trips etc.)
-
Supports students’ medical needs as directed and in accordance with RVS policies and procedures. In supporting students’ medical needs, a Learning Assistant may be required to assists the student with transfers, tube feeding and managing tracheotomy needs, oxygen, catheterization and other routine medical requirements including administration of prescription medication to students. Learning Assistants will only provide medical supports for which they have received adequate and appropriate training as determined by RVS, and when as a result of that training have acquired the necessary skill and knowledge to safely and competently provide the necessary medical support to students.

Engages in professional development opportunities on an ongoing basis

Contributes to the achievement of students’ educational goals and objectives by working with the teacher to create a positive, safe, and optimal learning environment

Participates in IPP meetings, supports the teacher with implementing IPP goals, and assists students in meeting the expected goals
-
Under the guidance of the Principal, collaborates closely with teachers, school staff, parents, and specialists from within and outside RVS as necessary, to adapt and implement special programs to identified students
-
Facilitates and encourages positive interactions among all students, staff, and other stakeholders
-
Participates in team meetings and consultations with professionals related to student programs as needed
-
Willing and able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Education/Experience
-
Two-year Diploma in a related field such as Child and Youth Care, Human Services, Social Work or a combination
-
One year of experience in a related field
-
Certification in Standard First Aid and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention course or equivalent
-
Knowledge of related support agencies and professionals within the community
-
Training in preventative/de-escalating behaviour course and/or willingness to become certified in divisional programs
Knowledge and Skills

Experience working with students and families from a strength-based, trauma-informed perspective

Strong skills in stress responses and critical thinking
-
Ability to be highly organized, energetic, and flexible
