Job Synopsis

This part-time hourly position is part of a project which supports the logistical operations of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Ontario thrift shops in the Region of Waterloo and provides a high-level of customer service to donors and potential partners.

The Home Pick-Up Associate will demonstrate a positive attitude and flexibility whilst providing hands-on donation and furniture pick-up services at the donor’s place of residence, as well as assisting with administrative duties related to the project. This role works with their supervisor, fellow picks-up staff, and the shops to ensure distribution of donated goods to the three local MCC Thrift Shops – Elmira, New Hamburg, and Kitchener.

This position works closely with various team members with regards to routing, scheduling and items accepted.

Due to the nature of this project, days and hours may fluctuate as prime home pick-up times are established. This position will range from a minimum of 6 to 15 hours per week with potential for more as the project grows, including some early mornings and alternating Saturdays.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada. Successful candidates will be required to provide a police background check upon hire.

Required

  • Self-motivated and willing to take initiative while at the same time willing to work as a team with home pick-up staff, shop staff, thrift support staff, and volunteers

  • Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions

  • Sensitivity and awareness of cultural, racial, economic, and socially diverse communities

  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse experiences and life situations

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and customer service skills with people of all ages and backgrounds

  • Written and verbal fluency in English

  • Ability to communicate effectively over the phone and through email.

  • Ability to communicate timelines frequently and effectively to staff and donors.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11 to 25 lbs. of force frequently

  • Experience in moving furniture

  • Valid ‘G’ Ontario driver’s license, ability to drive and dock cube truck into loading dock

  • Requires about 6 hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday

  • Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level

  • Sitting may be required only intermittently and occasionally

  • Occasional shifts working in the office for administrative work

  • Smart phone and computer skills (MS Office and web-based applications, website maintenance)

  • Comfort level dealing with cash and payment processing systems

  • Healthy balance of patience, humour and energy

  • Heart for justice, active peacemaking and global understanding

Preferred

  • Delivery truck experience
  • Tow Motor/Pump Cart experience
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Familiarity with Waterloo Region – Towns and Neighbourhoods
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Health Canada Regulations, and other legislation relating to a safe work environment

Key Responsibilities

Logistics

  • Safely driving truck between donor locations and MCC Ontario Thrift Shops

  • Maintain a customer centric culture – create a positive experience in all interactions with donors, volunteers, and colleagues

  • Work with shop teams to maintain an efficient transportation schedule between donors and shops

  • Load and unload appropriate donations with pallets, gaylords etc.

  • Operate shop trucks to pick-up donations and transport product to shop locations

  • Ensure customer payments and receipts are completed (as needed)

  • Work with shop teams to ensure donations are safely unloaded, stored, and tracked

  • Some early morning and alternating Saturday shifts are required

  • Daily truck tasks – example: checklist, gas, landfill runs, etc.

General

  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with donors

  • Track established key performance indicators (KPI’s) to measure the project’s success

  • Develop strategies to improve the project

  • Develop relationships with key multi-residential developments to grow this project

  • Assist with overall marketing of this project

  • Assist with administrative tasks as needed – schedule bookings via phone, email and website, routing, communicating deliveries to shops, etc.

  • Assist with storage and ecommerce solutions

  • Adhere to Health & Safety Guidelines as established by law and the organization including proper lifting techniques and using the tools available for movement of goods

  • Assist with refuse and the handling of donated goods as needed.

Other

  • Share the news about MCC Thrift and the MCC Ontario Thrift Network in the community

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interaction with others

  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized

  • Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public

MCC Ontario Thrift Shops provide 30% of MCCO’s annual revenue. These shops sell donated items and are managed at the local level through a team consisting of management staff and volunteers. Each shop seeks to be a friendly, caring presence in the community, showing value and respect to all. Practicing and promoting faithful stewardship and care for God's creation and raising funds for MCC are also key components to the mission statement of each MCC Thrift Shop.
