WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Services, the MLA is responsible for all duties related to the procurement of patient samples, specimen receiving and data entry, and preparation of specimens for analysis and for transport. The MLA is also responsible for various Quality Control activities, and duties specific to Histology and wash up, in addition to all other duties as assigned while remaining committed to and practicing all safety precautions in the laboratory and throughout the Hospital. WHAT YOU MUST HAVE:
- Must have completed a recognized program in Medical Laboratory Assistant from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Must have or be in the process of obtaining certification with the MLPAO or CSMLS
- Demonstrated skill in phlebotomy
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in venipuncture, specimen collection, laboratory procedures and data entry
- Proven ability to solve analytical and technical problems
- Highly team and customer focused with the ability to communicate respectfully in a pleasant, flexible and professional manner with all patients, families, staff and volunteers.
- Computer skills to include the regular use of Outlook, RL6, Internet/Intranet navigation including STEGHnet, basic word processing.
- Ability to adapt to changes in assignment throughout a shift, follow instructions and conduct yourself professionally.
- Open to change and is proactive to departmental initiatives.
- Ability to work alone, prioritize and take initiative – self-motivated.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with ability to positively influence others and develop trusting internal and external relationships
- Physical ability to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to regularly attend work in accordance with the Attendance Support Program
- Acceptable performance record that is aligned with STEGH values and code of conduct
WHAT WE PREFER YOU TO HAVE:
- Preference will be given to those with a minimum of one (1) year previous laboratory experience preferably within a Hospital environment
- Preference will be given to those with knowledge of Cerner LIS
HOURS:
The successful candidate must be available to work all tours applicable to the department. In addition, this position must be flexible to occasional changes in hours when required to meet the operational needs of the department.
