About the role
Who you are
- We are seeking a Director of Engineering who is as comfortable in the codebase as they are in leadership meetings or 1-on-1 coaching sessions
- Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a senior leadership role (Director or Head of Engineering) in a high-growth startup environment
- Technical Depth: Proven expertise in modern cloud architecture, DevOps, and managing complex distributed systems
- Problem Solver: A track record of stabilizing production environments and scaling infrastructure
- Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into business outcomes for non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to work from our Etobicoke office at least 2 days per week
- Mission-Driven: A genuine passion for renewable energy and the EV transition
What the job involves
- This is a pivotal role for a proactive leader who wants to bridge the gap between high-level product vision and technical execution
- You will be the architect of our engineering culture, ensuring our systems are scalable and our teams are high-performing
- Architecture & Strategy: Define the long-term technical roadmap and stack strategy to ensure our platform can handle rapid scaling
- Security & DevOps: Oversee DevOps practices and security protocols to maintain the integrity of our charging network
- Lead by Doing: Jump into the code and architecture when necessary to unblock the team or set technical standards
- Coaching & Mentorship: Build a culture of excellence by mentoring engineering managers and individual contributors
- Culture Carrier: Foster an environment of psychological safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Operational Excellence: Own the engineering operating model. You will track and optimize metrics such as delivery predictability, code quality, system reliability, and velocity
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product and Operations to ensure technical feasibility and timely delivery
- Production Stability: Take full ownership of incident management, postmortems, and system uptime
- What Success Looks Like:
- Reliable Delivery: Your team consistently hits sprint goals and quarterly roadmap commitments with minimal friction
- High Standards: Releases are high-quality, stable, and scalable, with a measurable reduction in bugs over time
- Resilient Organization: You’ve built a high-performing team with clear ownership, strong middle management, and reduced "bus factor" (dependency on specific individuals)
- Radical Transparency: You provide clear visibility into engineering metrics, making success (and areas for improvement) measurable for the entire executive team
