Environmental Coordinator

Reports to: Manager- Environmental Affairs

Job Type: Permanent, Full Time

Location: Nanticoke, ON

Salary Range: base salary starting at $74,000; actual pay rate commensurate with experience

Job Overview

Safety is the Core Value of Stelco and the individual will make Safety the #1 priority in the execution of all work activities, including monitoring contractor/vendor safety in support of work efforts.

This role will include leading projects and tasks that contribute to the facility’s compliance with environmental regulations, and continuous improvement in environmental performance. This is an existing vacancy.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support the Environmental Manager, in liaising with government officials such as the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and municipal government, from time to time.
  • Support the Environmental Manager, in liaising with local stakeholders including neighbours and the Nanticoke Environment Committee, as may be required, from time to time.
  • Lead report writing and submissions - as required by federal/provincial/municipal environmental requirements, and Stelco internal plant reports as may be required.
  • Work with and provide support to plant staff to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Prepare and submit environmental compliance approval applications.
  • Develop and implement source reduction and environmental control solutions to improve performance and meet new requirements.
  • Assist with on-going implementation of Stelco’s Environmental Management System.
  • Manage and direct contracted service companies working on environmental projects.
  • Practice the requirements of the Stelco safety program to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Provide support to the Manager – Environmental Affairs, as required.

Job Qualifications

  • Honours degree or diploma in Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field
  • Familiarity with current, relevant environmental regulations
  • At least three years of relevant environmental work experience
  • Previous work experience in the steel and/or manufacturing sector is an asset

  • Demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret environmental legislation with respect to effects on Stelco's operations

Working conditions

  • Fast-paced manufacturing environment for a high impact team

  • Combination of office work and working within various areas of the industrial facility.
  • Safe production is a core value of our organization. All work must be performed in accordance with established safety procedures and guidelines. This includes the mandatory use of company‑issued personal protective equipment such as hard hats, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, flame‑resistant clothing, and safety footwear with metatarsal protection throughout the work shift
  • Our Lake Erie facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • The position requires you to work overtime as may be needed
