Area Manager - Operations

**Reports to:**Division Manager

**Department:**Operating Services (MSU)

**Location:**Nanticoke, Ontario

**Type:**Full Time, Permanent

**Salary:**Starting at $150,000

About the role

The successful candidate will be able to supervise and direct supervisors and production employees in a fast-paced, steelmaking facility. This is an existing vacancy.

Your day-to-day:

  • Administration of the Stelco safety program to ensure a safe work environment and safe work practices
  • Promotes safety by various means (safety contacts, safety tours, incident investigations and follow-up, MSDS and JSA review, equipment condition, etc.) and leads by example
  • Ensures adherence to all environmental control procedures and relevant codes and standards
  • Applies engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to evaluate and resolve operating issues to maximize operation efficiencies
  • Responsible for performance management of direct report Shift Managers and Process Coordinators, and provides guidance to help individuals to achieve goals
  • Plans, organizes and manages area budget and expenditures to ensure strategic and cost-effective operations are adhered to
  • Coordinate strategic initiatives/improvements with engineering and maintenance services
  • Interact with key customers to ensure operating unit reliability
  • Plan facility outages

What you bring to the table

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering and Technology or a related field
  • 5+ years of management experience in iron/steel manufacturing or heavy industry

Job Skills and Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated expertise in cost control and computerized planning systems
  • Proven leadership and communication skills, with the ability to operate effectively in a fast‑paced environment and maintain a strong sense of urgency
  • Experience directing and supervising a unionized workforce

Your work environment:

  • Fast-paced manufacturing environment for a high impact team
  • Heavy Industrial Setting
  • The job is within a heavy industrial environment, and you will be required to work within various areas of the facility
  • Safety is our highest priority and safety procedures and guidelines must always be adhered to. This includes wearing PPE, such as a hard hat, protective ear and eye wear, respirator, flame retardant clothing and safety boots with metatarsal protection during the work shift
  • Lake Erie facility operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year
  • On call, vacation and sick relief coverage is required
  • The position may require you to work overtime as needed
  • A valid driver’s license and vehicle is required to work at this facility
