About the role

Your Opportunity:

The University of Alberta Hospital is looking to fill a Medical Laboratory Technologist I role in the Special Chemistry department, where you will have the opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively within our team environment. Showcase your strong attention to detail, aptitude and proficiency in lab techniques. You will handle manual and automated special chemistry procedures while accurately ensuring quality results. Specialized techniques you will use include manual radioimmunoassay and ELISA methods, gas chromatography, FTIR, LC/MS/MS, and wet chemistry methods. In addition, you will maintain laboratory records, perform routine equipment maintenance, perform troubleshooting on various laboratory instruments, verify patient results, and participate in quality control activities. You will have the opportunity to utilize your interpersonal and communication skills while completing patient collections and representing Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in a respectful, professional and courteous manner. You have an ability to encourage others and build positive, respectful and collaborative working relationships while assisting in the orientation and training of new staff and students. Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Recent experience with manual chemistry methods including spectrophotometry, RIA, multiplex bead immunoassay, and manual ELISA testing. Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized chemistry equipment including LC/MS/MS, Cobas e801, Siemens BNII Nephelometer, Bio-Rad Bio-Plex 2200, and Automated ELISA methods. Familiarity with the Epic Beaker laboratory information system is required. Must have the ability to operate Windows based computer applications. Must possess the ability to promote positive working relationships. Must demonstrate and promote the APL values of Kindness, Inclusion, Innovation, Agility and Accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of basic endocrinology is an asset. The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve these is an asset. Recent experience in a large, complex facility is an asset as is knowledge of quality systems, quality control theory and application.
