SMHS MD Care Nurse - Department of Psychiatry

The opportunity:

The Department of Psychiatry invites applications for a full-time nurse to work as the Student Mental Health Services and MDCare Program as a Coordinator. The coordinator will work as part of an interdisciplinary team providing services for each program. For MDCare, some of the tasks will include screening incoming requests for services, completing intake assessments and providing linkage for patients to access other clinical are or mental health resources. For Student Mental Health Services, some of the tasks will include providing evidence-based clinical care to patients, acting as a case manager, participating in wellness initiatives, and managing communications with other services providers and stakeholders. For both programs, the coordinator is expected to provide individual and group psychotherapy, assist with day-to-day operations of the services, prepare reports and maintain charts and databases.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

The successful candidate will be a graduate from an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing and hold a BScMH, BScPN, or BN. The candidate will be registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM).

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Minimum of 3 years recent mental health experience working in a clinical setting (hospital-based or community) is required.
  • Experience providing direct mental health care to individuals and groups within an interdisciplinary team is required.
  • Demonstrated effective skills in the following areas: formulation of mental health symptoms within a biopsychosocial framework, interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking and clinical reasoning and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence in assessment and triaging of mental health concerns, risk assessment, treatment planning, individual therapy, group therapy, case management, crisis intervention and discharge planning.
  • Demonstrate experience in mental health clinical skills, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and/or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Proficiency with job-related software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Greenspace, and LibreMD.
  • Demonstrate effective teaching skills and abilities working with clients and families and to support and educate colleagues in providing mental healthcare.
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate and provide leadership with a team in providing mental healthcare.
  • Ability to practice independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team healthcare team is essential.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal are essential.
  • Demonstrate effective organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, creative problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage workflow independently.
