The Company
GCS Group is an established telecom construction contractor running active HDD and hydrovac crews throughout Alberta. We take on complex underground projects and we rely on experienced, professional operators to execute them at a high level. We're hiring a Senior Hydrovac Operator to take a leadership role on our most demanding telecom installations.
Position Overview
As a Senior Operator, you're the standard-setter on site. You bring years of hands-on hydrovac experience, a thorough understanding of safe excavation around live utilities, and the judgment to handle whatever the ground throws at you. You'll lead by example, mentor junior crew members, and work in close coordination with project management to ensure every excavation is completed safely and on schedule.
Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of hydrovac operations on complex telecom and HDD projects
- Execute precision daylighting and utility exposure in high-risk and congested utility corridors
- Oversee all aspects of equipment operation including pre-trips, fluid management, spoil handling, and end-of-day servicing
- Serve as the primary point of contact between hydrovac operations and site supervision
- Identify and communicate ground hazards, utility conflicts, and operational concerns immediately
- Mentor and guide intermediate and junior operators on technique, safety, and professionalism
- Maintain detailed field documentation and contribute to project reporting
- Enforce compliance with all ground disturbance, environmental, and site safety regulations
What You Bring
- All certifications must be valid and current — confirmed before hire, no exceptions
- Extensive hydrovac operating experience, including work in complex utility environments
- Proven background supporting HDD or telecom underground construction projects
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience guiding less experienced operators
- Strong mechanical knowledge and ability to troubleshoot equipment issues in the field
- Valid Class 3 driver's license preferred

SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Commercial vehicle training (Hours of Service, Load Securement, Weights and Dimensions, Pre-trip inspections);
- Valid class 1 or 3 drivers license, with clean driver's abstract
- CSTS 2020
- WHMIS 2015
- Ground Disturbance Level 2 / Supervisory
- Fall Protection
