Occupational Health and Safety Specialist - 1775
Regular Full Time Position– Global
Salary Range $64,125.23 - $72,676.33 (35 hrs per week)
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, Training, and Organizational Design, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Specialist will be responsible to lead programs and initiatives across the organization to develop a safety culture and improve working conditions to protect all employees.
The OHS Specialist will supervise one staff member while developing strong connections both internally and externally to provide support and guidance to both Practice and Administrative teams. Drawing on resources from WorkSafe BC and other partner organizations the OHS Specialist will provide in depth reporting on incidence, accidents, and near misses, with recommendations on how to prevent future incidence. They will also be responsible for managing WorkSafe reports and claims to drive improvements.
The OHS Specialist will partner with the Employee Co-Chair of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee to engage employees across the organizations to have a representative committee that makes recommendations to Leadership to consistently move forward safety initiatives, improve safety measures, and team performance.
The OHS Team under the leadership of the OHS Specialist will work with the Training Team to develop training that enhances safety, with the HR Team to support employees to return to work, and with the Admin Team to ensure facilities provide safe working environments.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Post secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field is an asset
-
Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) certification or a willingness to complete
-
Computer literacy on MS word, Excel , MS Teams
-
Excellent communication (written, verbal and listening), interpersonal and customer service skills
-
Ability to understand and apply complex governing documents and apply overlapping standards
-
1-2 years working in the Health and Safety Field
-
In-depth knowledge WorkSafeBC standards and applicable legislation
-
Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and history
-
Experience working with MCFD or other provincial child welfare delegated agency an asset
-
Subject matter expertise and a comprehensive understanding of progressive Health and Safety standards and best practices
-
Valid Drivers license
-
Criminal Record Check
-
Willingness to travel for work related purposes

Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to assume leadership position
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with multi-professional groups
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and complete multiple tasks in a fast paced environment
- Ability to motivate others across departments and organizational levels
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated effectiveness at time management
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
- Group facilitation skills
- Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution
- Open and approachable; ability to be an exceptional influencer; builds strong relationships, demonstrates respect and bridges understanding across diverse backgrounds, generations and lived experience
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with all staff and colleagues
- Open to learning and integrating Sto:Lo cultural ways of being
- Ability to coordinate investigations, complete assessments and develop clear reports with findings, conclusions and recommendations
- Ability to engage and facilitate dialogues regarding Health and Safety topics
- Demonstrated ability to influence the organization at the senior level
- Preference may be given to Indigenous candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
