JOB SUMMARY

The Fitter Mechanic is responsible for operating and maintaining various substation mechanical and electrical systems throughout the City of Ottawa and mechanical and electrical systems at the generation facility on the Ottawa River. Other activities include work on construction of new substations, and additions and modifications to existing plant.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform mechanical and electrical work on Hydro Ottawa and customer equipment
  • Install, test, commission and maintain a variety high voltage substation equipment (4kV-230kV) including transformers, tapchangers, circuit breakers, switches, potential transformers, surge arrestors, bus way, cable systems, DC systems and generators as required
  • Build and erect High Voltage substation equipment
  • Perform detailed mechanical inspections of stations and generating facilities
  • Respond to emergency conditions, troubleshoot and diagnose operational problems and provide repairs
  • Prepare parts list and source parts and materials from approved vendors as required
  • Prepare dimensional drawings for the manufacturing of parts no longer available from OEM and complete CVP forms as required.
  • Use welding and cutting equipment to fabricate and modify parts, components and accessories.
  • Provide job specific input to Assets Engineering and various teams as required
  • Review engineered drawings and provide quality assurance of station structures pre and post fabrication, for capital projects.
  • Provide on-site support to electricians and/or operators for the completion of stations, customer, or generation related work
  • Ensure that work conforms to all applicable regulatory requirements, Hydro Ottawa standards and in a timely and effective manner
  • Oversee the work of contractors in substations and/or generating stations as applicable.
  • Maintain an inventory of hand and power tools and keep work area in a safe and orderly condition
  • Respect all safety rules and regulations including reporting unsafe conditions, recommending ways of improving the safety of the work environment, ensuring work practices are in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any other applicable legislation
  • Certify work completed by company specific reports in database.
  • Ensure work performed by contractors conforms with Hydro Ottawa work and equipment standards
  • Apply for, hold, and/or issue Work permits as per the Utility Work Protection Code.
  • Perform high voltage switching and de-energizing of station equipment.
  • Operate and inspect a variety of vehicles including but not limited to, service trucks, trailers, aerial devices, and radial boom derrick trucks
  • Responsible for the use of corporate credit cards to purchase job specific parts and materials and complete expense reports in JDE.
  • Test, analyze and communicate the condition of hazardous insulating materials such as PCBs present in oil and purity or contamination of SF6 gas.
  • Respond to emergency systems conditions, perform diagnosis troubleshooting and repair of faulty equipment where possible to ensure the safe operation and restoration of power to customers.
  • Train other staff in area of expertise
  • Perform other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of Grade 12 and an accredited 8000 hour college-based apprenticeship program as an Industrial Millwright or equivalent
  • Journeyperson Millwright Certificate considered an asset
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience as a licensed Fitter Mechanic/Millwright
  • Testing and maintenance software training is an asset
  • Forklift certification is an asset
  • Work Protection Code certification is an asset
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification is an asset
  • Hoisting and Rigging certification is an asset
  • RBD certification is an asset
  • Propane certification is an asset
  • CPR/First Aid certification is an asset

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Driver’s License - Class ARZ
  • Government of Canada Security Clearance

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are governed by the collective agreement between Hydro Ottawa Limited and IBEW Local 636.

Hydro Ottawa offers a Hybrid Work Model. Hybrid work is position specific, details of the hybrid model will be discussed with successful candidates.
