The Data Manager will direct and lead MIRA and CLSA’s data systems by collaborating with senior leaders and overseeing a team of statisticians to ensure data is organized, stored safely, and accessible for various purposes including data access, analysis and decision-making. They will also be responsible for data management policies, procedures, and protocols, manage databases, oversee data storage, ensure data quality and security,

The Data Manager will ensure all data systems are managed in accordance with scientific and operational requirements of both the CLSA and MIRA. This position will direct and lead data analytical services and will continually assess areas for improvement in data standards, understanding and/or process, and facilitate implementation of improvements. The Data Manager will report to the Principal Investigator of the CLSA and the Scientific Director for MIRA.

Operational Leadership:

  • Managing and applying specialized knowledge to initiate, design, develop, coordinate/manage data analytics from large research platforms.
  • Designing and building large, computerized databases for a wide range of research projects using applicable software and for designing and producing data collection forms for research platforms and clinical trials.
  • Writing and implementing programs for error checking, consistency checks, participant follow-up scheduling, and the identification of missing data to ensure accurate, complete and efficient data collection, analysis, and reporting. Identify and correct any data collection and computer problems.
  • Identifying new or modified services that the research platform could deliver based on data management requirements within the organizations and making recommendations accordingly.
  • Establishing mechanisms for open, bi-directional communications with senior leaders and between all internal (e.g., research, IT and administration staff) and external (e.g., research groups, institutions and organizations) data management stakeholders.
  • Overseeing technical and policy aspects of the CLSA and MIRA’s data management by liaising with all PI’s and directors for successful data management operations.
  • Provide input in strategic directions and business models for data management and analytical services.
  • Responsible for planning long-term needs for various research platforms and service needs to accommodate expansion.

Operational management:

  • Oversee and manage processes for the provision of data analytical services using MIRA and CLSA research platforms to internal and external collaborators and stakeholders.
  • Work closely with internal teams (e.g., Data Access, IT and University contracts offices) to manage service requests, resources, and agreements.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director MIRA/CLSA to develop and implement service models.
  • Maintain high standards of research integrity by ensuring relevant clinical and research standards and practices are applied across data systems.
  • Participating in governance committees where appropriate related to oversight and accountability for the research platforms.
  • Managing and integrating service requests from other users and re-aligning workflow as necessary to realize efficient workflow and improved services to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with relevant investigators and internal operational units to ensure data analytical services are well coordinated.
  • Forecasting database requirements to meet deadlines under the shifting and competing priorities of multiple investigators and stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Develop and provide reports to funders and research platform teams.
  • Delegate database construction and data management responsibilities to a backup data manager to facilitate project completion and meet deadlines, as required.
  • Manage staff time allocations to data analysis projects across multiple projects and monitor progress.
  • Overseeing purchases of specialized data and data analytic services equipment and software such as servers, remote data analyses platforms and associated equipment, PC's.
  • Managing, negotiating and maintaining contracts for hardware maintenance and software licenses (separate from site licenses held by the university).

Human Resources & People Management

  • Hiring, training and supervising staff and external contractors to meet project deadlines and respond to emerging strategic needs of the CLSA and MIRA related to data management.
  • Support trainees and HQP in providing appropriate training and guidance in data analytics.
  • Ensuring staff work securely and following privacy and confidentiality guidelines and ensuring risk mitigation strategies are in place.

Financial:

  • Producing budgets and timelines for data management related aspects of grant applications or collaborative research projects.
  • Overseeing service contract agreements related to data systems, including submitting invoices for analytical services provided.
  • Monitoring budget expenditures and maintaining research accounts by tracking data management, data analytics costs across multiple and ongoing projects.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education & Experience:

  • PhD in statistics or relevant field is required.
  • 3+ years working proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as across complex projects that span sectors.
