POSITION SUMMARY

The successful candidate will work as a member of the of the Digital Evidence Management Unit and be responsible for managing and facilitating the digital evidence (video, audio, photo) records received at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. This position performs technical and administrative law enforcement functions in the control, collection, redaction, disclosure, destruction, quality assurance and disposition of collected evidence. The position includes a variety of responsibilities and requires a high degree of sensitivity to confidential matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Responsible for working with various technologies to monitor and fulfil requests for digital evidence.
  • Review images, audio, and video evidence (body-worn camera/In-car camera footage, audio/video statements, photographs etc.) and redact sound or images in preparation for disclosure to the Crown Attorney’s office and POA Prosecutors.
  • Prepare, redact as appropriate and apply MFIPPA exemptions to digital evidence records, and for release to the requester.
  • Maintain a comprehensive filing and tracking system for requests for disclosure.
  • Communication with internal members regarding submitting digital evidence and access and disclosure activities.
  • Clarify and obtain missing information pertaining to digital evidence.
  • Review access to information requests and determine location of and responsibility for relevant records within the Digital Evidence Management System (DEMS).
  • Answer inquiries and provide support to SSMPS members and outside agencies regarding requests for digital evidence.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of training sessions (i.e. redaction processes, FOI etc.), when necessary and as directed or requested.
  • Create, maintain, and update procedure manuals related to own duties and responsibilities.
  • Perform responsibilities in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and other policy, legislative requirements.
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Will work with a computer for many hours of the day maintaining focus on accuracy of information in a shared working environment.
  • Will work in an area that is highly confidential.
  • Will work with digital evidence that may be sensitive and disturbing in nature.
  • Must be able to work with above average time management skills to meet multiple deadlines.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in using computers and related software including Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to create tables and spread sheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgment, trust, and integrity.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and/or independently, when required
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to produce accurate work, with attention to detail
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of clear analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and ability to manage several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to make decisions within the scope of job responsibilities/duties.

Preferred:

  • Relevant understanding of digital evidence and digital evidence management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of audio-visual redaction techniques
  • Working knowledge of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) as well as relevant Orders issued by the Information and Privacy Commissioner's Office
  • Appropriate knowledge of internal Release of Information Guidelines
  • Appropriate knowledge of Service policies and procedures
  • Appropriate knowledge of NICHE, OSL and court processes

PREREQUISITES

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or hold permanent resident status.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing.
