Established in 1976 the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies (SIIT) is a First Nation governed post-secondary institution. Recognized under provincial legislation, the Institute has been conferred authority to grant certificates and diplomas. Nature and Scope
The Academics Advisor focuses on supporting learners through the academic lifecycle at SIIT. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.
General Accountability
The Academic Advisor will play a key role by assessing and advising current learners at SIIT with regards to their educational progression. The Advisor will increase learner success by helping them make informed decisions about their educational goals.
The incumbent is responsible for providing support services required by a learner such as exploring education and academic goals, identifying program and course requirements, and potential support services required to successfully transition into an employable individual or onto further post-secondary education. This position is accountable for follow-up with all SIIT learners, and ensuring they are progressing through their academic careers. This position provides additional support as required The range of accountabilities for this role include, but are not limited to:
Specific Accountabilities
Client Service
- Acts as primary point of contact and liaison with learners and academic units on a range of educational and administrative issues related to learners
- Provide confidential academic advising and follow up with individuals relating to their short and long-term educational and career goals, including assessing student needs, program planning and creating individual academic success plans
- Teach learners about the content and structure of post-secondary programming, including graduation and/or transfer requirements
- Help learners to understand the complete requirements of their program(s) of interest, including admission requirements and prerequisites, and to develop an academic plan to facilitate the completion of that program
- Advise and follow up with learners who are seeking appropriate support services
- Collaborate with the Registrar's Office and Program Coordinators to manage learners' credits
- Keep current with respect to SIIT programs and each program's entrance criteria and required qualifications
- Collaborate with Academic Leadership to develop an optimal advising process that meets their specific needs
- Collaborate with the Learning Services team in regards to assisting learners with the job search process: resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, and job search assistance
AdministrationCoordination
- Proficiently manage the caseload of learners and academic information within databases
- Continually monitor web-based information regarding SIIT current programs
- Conduct database, literature and web searches to find information to respond to inquiries from learners and community members
- Stay current with research and strategies relating to best practices in supporting learners
- Participate in student orientations and other student engagement events
- Work with out of province education ministries and authorities to determine applicant program eligibility
- Work with international accreditation bodies to establish an institutional standard when processing applications with international credits
Required Qualifications and Experience: Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years' experience working with learners in an academic advisory capacity. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge of First Nations cultures and organizations would be an asset. Incumbent must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation as travel is required.
