About This Role: York House School is inviting applications from compassionate, innovative, and qualified Teacher Librarians committed to providing an exceptional 21st Century learning environment for our girls. Reporting to the Vice Principal of Student Success, the successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in library management and a current knowledge of texts including online, media and paper. They must have proficiency in information technology (cataloging, database management), research, critical thinking, customer service, communication, and adaptability to new digital tools. This individual will have opportunities to be involved in the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that enhance students’ experiences at school.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education
  • British Columbia Teachers' certification or equivalent
  • Independent School experience is an asset
  • Any combination equivalent to: two years college-level course work in library science (or Library Technician Certificate), course or program in museum and/or archival studies is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Senior Learning Commons and its intersection with Senior School academic and co-curricular programs
  • Champion the Learning Commons as a vibrant, flexible, and student-centred hub for collaboration, inquiry, and creation
  • Manage the Learning Commons budget
  • Supervise and support the Senior Learning Commons Library Technician
  • Assess and develop collections: select and purchase books and resources; design and implement the collections’ display to appeal to a senior school community
  • Ensure that texts and resources offer a diverse set of viewpoints, and are age and stage appropriate
  • Communicate with students, parents, and faculty regarding library loans and policies
  • Teach or assist classes when they come in for learning activities, including research, resource selection, citation, and technology guidance
  • Actively create and supervise special events in the Learning Commons, such as author visits, special guests, reading incentives and contests, and cultural book fairs
  • Assist individuals or learning groups with accessing resources whether online or in print
  • Support classes in the curation of Libguides for class projects and units
  • Possible teaching duties and responsibilities
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned as needed to help in other areas

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Collaborative and flexible, supportive, and effective team-player
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships with all stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Minimum three years of library-based experience; background in Senior School Learning Commons settings is preferred
  • Experience with automated library systems, research databases, student registration systems, and Libguides
  • Ability to support teachers in providing a breadth of resources, both print and digital to support disciplinary learning
  • Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team
  • Knowledgeable in library/learning commons data management, including: report creation, data analysis, goal setting, and benchmarking
  • Exemplary communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
  • Confident working with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Google applications, and Mac operating systems
