What You’ll be Doing
The CIBC Optimization & Process Engineering (O&PE) department is made up of cross-functional teams, each with distinct mandates and core capabilities. These teams include Process Engineering (PE), Intelligent Automation (IA), and End-to-End Optimization (E2E), all of which are seeking co-op students to support ongoing efforts to enhance the delivery of products and services to our clients. As a member of one of these teams, you will collaborate in a team setting and focus on activities such as data collection, research, and analysis to assist in the design, testing, and implementation of organizational and process improvements.
Note: All applicants will be considered for all three teams. Candidates are encouraged to state their team preferences within their application and/or interview; however, allocation will ultimately be made based on business needs.
- PE Team: You will be responsible for supporting process improvement initiatives by applying tools such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Project Management. You’ll be part of a team that acts as internal consultants, partnering with stakeholders across the business to enhance operational efficiency in all areas.
- IA Team: You will be responsible for applying analytical skills to report on the performance of existing automations. You’ll be part of a team that works with technology and business partners to make automation processes more efficient across the business.
- E2E Team: You will be responsible for supporting end-to-end analysis to help optimize business processes and improve overall organizational performance through no- or low-tech enhancements. You’ll be part of a team dedicated to identifying and implementing practical solutions that quickly streamline operations across the organization.
At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

- Eligible candidates must be in their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies in a STEM program at a Canadian university and must be able to participate in a 16-month co-op term. However, you do not need to be in a registered Co-Op program to be considered for a role.

How You’ll Succeed
You’ll enhance operational efficiency by leveraging select skills as required by evolving business needs, such as:
- Assessing current CIBC processes and making recommendations to reduce costs and error rates, improve client experience and decrease cycle time.
- Documenting detailed current state maps, conducting process analysis, and designing future state process and client journey flows using Microsoft Visio and other process mapping tools.
- Collaborating with team members and stakeholders to identify opportunities for process improvements and implement solutions.
- Defining project requirements and preparing project summary reports (e.g., post-implementation reviews and data gathering from operations center visits).
- Using Microsoft Office Suite to draft and present recommendations, plans, and results to management.
- Applying AI concepts to improve processes and your own personal productivity.
- Performing data collection activities and time studies, incorporating statistical analysis techniques.
- Conducting data analysis utilizing tools such as Python, VBA, Power Query, and Power BI.
