About the role
ALS is hiring a senior radiochemistry expert to establish and lead radiochemical testing services for the mining and drinking water sectors in Canada. This role encompasses full responsibility for developing laboratory infrastructure, securing regulatory licensing and certification, creating and accrediting analytical methods, and managing the transition to full commercial operations. The position will ensure high technical standards, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency, while supporting both internal teams and external clients. Success will be measured by regulatory approvals, method accreditation, and service readiness.
Specific Responsibilities:
Safety
- Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures
- Maintain all relevant safety licensing and certifications respecting radiological samples and supplies
- Ensure radioactive material handling, storage, and disposal in compliance with radiation protection guidelines
- Ensure the safety system (including engineering controls and PPE) is maintained per requirements
- Ensure the team is fully compliant with all safety requirements through robust training and a culture of safety
Production
- Responsible for overall Turnaround time compliance
- Directs rush/fast TAT requests through close knowledge and working relationships with the network
- Leverage global expertise to achieve excellence in production and technical support
- Monitor and implement ways of increasing productivity and efficiency
- Deliver an excellent customer service experience that meets or exceeds client expectations
- Liaise with other departments on client enquiries and production
- Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality
Administration
- Develops the departmental structure (shift, etc.) based on production/staffing needs
- Work with the Laboratory Business Manager to achieve EBIT and ROS targets
- Establishes and monitors cost controls to ensure the department meets budget
- Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of capital equipment proposals, project and annual budgets
- Monitor staff capabilities and align their roles to their skills
- Promotes a culture of excellence in quality
- Conduct regular crew talks on safety, quality, process changes, and company communications
Technical and Quality
- Develop and implement Ra226, Ra228, and gross alpha/beta methods
- Evaluating and adopting best practices using automation, AI, etc.
- Method development and harmonization
- Proactively review procedures and processes and provides input on their quality and reliability to the laboratory
- Technical support for major CARs (with QA)
- Continuous improvement orientation to develop new processes or improve on existing processes
- Technical support to business development and client services for the pursuit and execution of projects
- Technical support to key accounts
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Highly motivated, able to take initiative and work as part of a team
- Strong knowledge base in radiochemistry such as experience with GFPC, LSC, Alpha spectrometry
- Extensive experience with methods for analysis of radium-226, -228, and gross alpha/beta
- Service and client oriented. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience and knowledge in the broader analytical chemistry (inorganics) field an asset
- Administration skills including management of people, systems, and reporting on financial elements
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional discipline for monitoring performance accountabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams within a matrix management setting
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a university degree in Chemistry or equivalent degree and experience
- Minimum of 10 years in analytical testing fields related to environmental testing
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as Supervisor in a production laboratory environment
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities.
- May be exposed to unpleasant odours.
