About the role
Applications are invited for the position of Web & Digital Design Specialist in the Marketing Division, located at the Welland Campus. The starting hourly rate is $33.55/hr (Pay Band G - $33.55/hr to $38.88/hr) for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary.
Reporting to the Director, Marketing, the successful candidate supports website design projects and digital updates, collaborating with internal teams and external partners. This role is responsible for creating wireframes, design mock-ups, and coding responsive, accessible, and brand-compliant websites using HTML, CSS, and WordPress PHP. The Specialist also produces and edits web content, ensuring alignment with Niagara College’s branding and style standards, and contributes to enhancing the College’s digital presence through innovative web strategies.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Maintains content, themes, and plugins on existing Niagara College (NC) websites
- Ensures the accuracy and functionality of web pages by collaborating with faculty and staff to update or remove content, imagery, and links as needed
- Responds to maintenance requests submitted through the Marketing FreshDesk system
- Develops and uses expertise and domain knowledge of established systems, processes, and standards to make appropriate decisions on tasks through the ticket system
- Guarantees consistency between the design of online and print materials
- Ensures internal corporate policies, standards, and consistency in style while meeting AODA
- Autonomously performs troubleshooting steps on web tasks using expertise and domain knowledge and refers advanced troubleshooting tasks, as required
- Independently identifies potential areas of improvement on NC website(s) to appropriate stakeholders and develops and executes a maintenance plan at the direction of senior staff
- Sets up new WordPress Content Management System and/or static-based websites within a hosted environment. Also integrates 3rd party data sources using out-of-the-box solutions
- Develops and ensures the design of NC websites is modern, compatible, brand-standard, etc.
- Designs new themes and plugins or adapts themes for new projects
- Acts as liaison secondary to the Lead Web and Digital Developer for website-related items
- Provide website technical support and training to College staff
- Guides and provides recommendations to managers and stakeholders, and contributes to decisions regarding web styling, accessibility, usability, and Web design
Qualifications:
- Three (3) year diploma or degree in Multimedia and Web Design or a similar field of study
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience designing, coordinating, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining multiple websites, including planning, content structure, design, and development
- Expert experience with applicable web technologies (HTML, CSS, WordPress, PHP) and graphical standards, and ability to consult and provide recommendations
- Experience liaising with, understanding, and interpreting client needs and implementing websites that balance and meet client and overall organizational objectives
- Proven experience in WordPress-based accessible web design, adhering to web and accessibility (AODA) standards, with a portfolio of completed projects
- Knowledge of WordPress theme and plugin development would be a benefit
- Strong prioritization and project management skills, with an ability to determine urgency levels
- Ability to work independently, making strategic decisions aligned with college objectives
- Outstanding communication skills, capable of conveying ideas and gathering feedback
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating and integrating multiple web projects/ assignments
- Excellent time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
