************Ditidaht Community School

**********Job Posting:**Grade 3-5 Teacher

Are you looking for an adventure?

Do you want to be part of a team of educators who are committed to high levels of learning for all students?

Do you plan highly engaging lessons and possess a passion for your craft?

Are you looking for an outdoor living adventure in a pristine setting?

If you answered “Yes!” to these questions, you just might be the right person to fill an exciting teaching position at Ditidaht Community School.

AboutDitidahtCommunity School

Ditidaht Community School is located in the Traditional Territory of the Ditidaht First Nation at Nitinat Lake, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The community is small and semi-remote, accessible by logging road from Port Alberni or Lake Cowichan. Living and working here requires flexibility and an appreciation for a quieter, more remote lifestyle.

The school serves approximately 52 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Class sizes are small, and staff work closely together. Because of the size of the school, teachers often take on a variety of roles and work across grades or subject areas.

There is a strong sense of connection between the school and community. Families know one another, and the work we do in the classroom is often connected to what matters in the community. This includes a focus on land, language, and culture, as well as supporting students in developing confidence, identity, and a sense of belonging.

Our Approach to Learning

Education at Ditidaht Community School is grounded in both the BC curriculum and the priorities of the Ditidaht community. We are working to build programming that reflects local knowledge, language, and experiences, while also supporting students to meet provincial graduation requirements.

Teachers are supported to:

  • Build learning experiences that connect to place and community
  • Work with Language and Culture staff to integrate Ditidaht knowledge
  • Support individualized learning and meet students where they are
  • Focus on literacy, numeracy, and foundational skills
  • Develop inquiry-based and hands-on learning opportunities

This work is ongoing. It requires collaboration, openness, and a willingness to try, reflect, and adjust.

The Role

The successful candidate will be part of a small, collaborative staff. This means working closely with colleagues, educational assistants, and community members on a daily basis.

The role includes:

  • Planning and delivering instruction that is responsive to student needs
  • Creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and supported
  • Building strong relationships with students and families
  • Participating in school-wide initiatives, including land-based learning and community events
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of locally grounded curriculum

Teachers here are supported, but the work can be complex. Students come with a wide range of strengths, needs, and experiences. Patience, consistency, and a relational approach are essential.

This is a unionized position covered by the Collective Agreement between BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) and the Ditidaht Community School Operations Board.

The Ideal Candidate

This position may be a good fit for someone who:

  • Values relationships as the foundation of teaching
  • Is comfortable working in a small school setting
  • Is open to learning from community members and colleagues
  • Is flexible and able to adapt to changing needs
  • Is interested in place-based and culturally grounded education

  • Understands that meaningful work often takes time and persistence

It may not be the right fit for someone who is looking for a highly structured or traditional school environment.

Salary and Supports

  • Competitive salary (SD70 pay scale)
  • Housing provided and moving allowance
  • Benefits package and RRSP program
  • Opportunities for professional learning and collaboration
  • Supportive and team-oriented work environment

The****Application Process

Please submit:

  • Cover letter
  • Resume
  • BC Ministry of Education Teacher Certificate
  • TQS Card
  • Minimum of three professional references

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate an ability to build strong, respectful relationships with students.
