What You'll Do

Reporting to the Discipline Lead - Distribution, the Distribution Engineer is responsible for communicating directly with clients and customers to establish service requirements and provide solid design solutions and alternatives that meet client needs. Distribution Engineer/Designer will work with landowners, customers, and other client departments to ensure that the projects are effectively coordinated and executed by yourself. They will ensure that facilities are designed in a safe, cost-effective and timely manner and meet all applicable codes, standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

  • Independently execute the design of rural and urban distribution infrastructure including but not limited to: line rebuilds, cable/equipment upgrades, voltage conversions, customer connections/upgrades, joint use applications, URD, DER/microgeneration interconnection, and more.
  • Provide technical reviews and quality assurance on project deliverables prepared by junior and intermediate staff.
  • Coordinate with clients, landowners, utility companies, and third-party stakeholders to secure approvals and resolve technical or permitting challenges.
  • Proactively monitor project progress, proactively identifying risks, constraints, and opportunities to maintain scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Conduct site assessments and field reviews to validate design feasibility, support construction, and ensure alignment with good engineering and construction practices.
  • Identify and address safety and environmental risks within project designs, implementing solutions in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, designers, and drafters, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including the development of design standards, processes, and best practices.
  • Demonstrate strong initiative by independently identifying tasks, driving work forward with minimal direction, and taking ownership of technical and project challenges.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Registered as a P. Eng, or P.L. (Eng). in good standing with at least one of the following: APEGA, NAPEG, or Engineers Yukon
  • 5+ years of experience in Distribution Line Design and is comfortable authenticating drawings and being the Engineer of Record
  • Distribution Line Design experience
  • Possess a working knowledge of AEUC, CSA C22.3 No. 1 and No. 7 and CSA C22.1.
  • Proficient in or capable of using PLS-CADD, Pull Planner, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, AGI32, and CYMEDIST.
  • Experience in construction and field installations would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in distribution system planning would be considered an asset. This includes planning studies, equipment settings, and more.
  • Experience working with ATCO (Alberta/ Yukon/ NWT), ENMAX, SaskPower, and Fortis Alberta is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical drawings and schematics, civil drawings, and more.
  • Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills
