Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.

As an Indigenous Student Success Teacher for DDSB, you’ll create a vibrant and supportive learning environment where students thrive. You’ll bring your passion for teaching to the classroom, guiding students through their educational journey and fostering a love for learning.
As a member of the Indigenous Education team, the Indigenous Student Success Teacher will provide student success support at Port Perry High School, in the Indigenous Student Centre, using a student success/credit recovery model. This position reports to the System Lead: Indigenous Education and Outdoor Environmental Education.
Responsibilities
- Support secondary Indigenous student initiatives and events that support educational pathways, working closely with colleges and universities.
- Staff support for the PPHS Indigenous student council, and student circles within PPHS FoS, to support transitions as needed.
- Works in partnership with Secondary Indigenous Student Engagement Coach.
- Collaborate closely with members of the Indigenous Education department, Indigenous community partners, school staff, students, and families, to facilitate student-centred co-planned programming.
- Measure the success of the program as it aligns with the Indigenous Education Policy and Procedure. Creatively think of ways to expand the program to create a greater impact across the Board.
- Works with Indigenous Specialized Education Instructional Facilitator where needed.
- Ability to deliver credits within an alternative learning model, continuous intake, including credit recovery and SST model.
- Cultivate, nurture, and maintain relationships with staff at Port Perry High School in a coaching and resource role as well as supportive role to ensure Indigenous student success.
- Cultivate, nurture, and maintain relationships with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, and other Indigenous community partners in support of Indigenous student success.
- Cultivate, nurture, and maintain relationships with DDSB Indigenous students and families in support of Indigenous student success.
The Successful Candidate Must Demonstrate
- Experience working within/alongside Indigenous communities.
- Experience teaching and integrating Indigenous histories and pedagogies into the curriculum to support credit recovery/student success model.
- Ability to deliver credits (credit recovery/SST model).
- Ability to move off site when needed.
- Skills in managing consultative and collaborative processes.
- Skills in effective problem solving.
- Experience with positive community relations.
- Excellent communication skills.
Qualifications
- Ontario Teacher's Certificate in good standing.
- Intermediate/Senior qualifications.
- Guidance, Special Education, math and science qualifications are an asset.
- Lived experience as an Indigenous person (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit), Indigenous Ancestry, experience working with Indigenous youth or in Indigenous education, outreach, or community engagement are considered an asset.
- Skills in consultative and collaborative processes.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Skills in effective problem solving.
- Comfortable working within e-learning and virtual learning environments.
- Demonstrating experience in understanding and developing curriculum-based resources related to Indigenous contributions both past and present, Treaties, residential schools, accurate histories, and the impacts of ongoing colonization.
- Strong connection with and/or understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures, histories, perspectives, and culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy.
