Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) operates and maintains the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay Bridges, facilitating over 34 million crossings annually. HHB is committed to providing safe, efficient, and cost-effective cross-harbour transportation. Safety is the top priority—for employees, bridges, and the public—making it a shared responsibility for all staff.
Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Painter cleans, removes failed coatings, prepares steel surfaces, and applies paint to bridge structures.
This Safety Sensitive Position involves working in extreme heights (170–320 feet), confined spaces, and adverse weather. Key responsibilities include adhering to HHB safety standards, ensuring confined space access, reporting safety concerns, and performing rescues if needed, while wearing HHB-supplied protective equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Adhere to HHB safety policies, procedures, and reporting standards.
Perform painting of the bridges while maintaining quality control and productivity in the Maintenance Painting Program.
Set up/tear down workstations, inspect/clean tools, and store equipment.
Complete required safety training and skills development (training provided or paid for by HHB).
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Ability to work at extreme heights (170–320 feet), in adverse weather, in confined spaces, in direct traffic, and participate in high-angle rescue.
- Must pass physical demands and lead-level tests, as well as employment and criminal background checks.
- Punctual, dependable, and safety-focused with a can-do attitude.
- Experience with power hand tools and working in a team environment. (An Asset).
- Clean driving record and valid Class 5 Nova Scotia's Drivers License (An Asset).
- Experience with heights. (An Asset).
Vacancy: Hiring 2 positions
Position: This full-time, Permanent seasonal position runs Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM (40 hours/week) during HHB’s summer season; mid-April to the end of October (subject to change based on operational needs), with required overtime, including weekends.
Wage rate: The hourly wage is $22.85 during probation per the Collective Agreement.
A Safety Sensitive Position is one where impaired performance due to drug or alcohol use could lead to incidents affecting safety, security, property, or the environment. These roles involve key operational responsibilities with little to no direct supervision.

About Halifax Harbour Bridges
Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) manages two key pieces of transportation infrastructure in the province of Nova Scotia: the Angus L. Macdonald and A. Murray MacKay bridges.
Every year, almost 34 million crossings are made across the two suspension bridges and on most weekdays, the average number of crossings is well above 105,000.
There are 35 permanent employees working for HHB and this number grows to almost 100 during the spring and summer with the painting and gardening crew. Another 50 members of the Corps of Commissionaires manage the bridge operations including cash toll collection and bridge security.
HHB is a provincial agency that reports to the Minister of Finance. All revenue generated through tolls is dedicated to the ongoing maintenance and operations of the bridges to ensure a safe, efficient and reliable passage for the public.
